Tomb Raider II: UNappreciation thread

I never understood the love for this game, and will never.

• The excessive combat amount.
• Lara’s personality/writing - Is she even TRI Lara? Why overuse those 90’s oneliners over and over? Their jackonary days are well over...
• Lackluster level design in the Maria Doria and Tibet levels.
• Who thought it was a good idea to send hordes of enemies onto the player at only the second level! At least give the player some time to save a couple of medipacks...
• Excessive key-fetching type of quests.
• Bad voice acting.

This is the TRII *HATE* thread! :mis:

There's not much I feel TR2 did wrong, tbh. I'm one of the rare people who doesn't think the ship levels went on too long, and I think the level design of Catacombs/Ice Palace is excellent. I guess the only things I didn't like are:

Lara stalling fire of the M16 when going from going from stationary to running/walking and vice versa.
The insane amount of human enemies... they should be a bare minimum like TR1.
Human enemies appearing in some places (The Wreck of the Maria Doria) before you, ruining the sense of isolation. Lara should be there first.

It's probably my least fav ! Loved china and tibet but venice and maria doria are kind of a turn off for me. Even if the ship level was a good idea in the first place !

I really like the actual levels (and Maria Doria is my favorite), but I hardly ever want to replay the game due to the amount of combat. It was completely unreasonable how many enemies there were and how long it took to kill each enemy. The combat wasn't even particularly difficult, just very boring. It's hard to appreciate the atmosphere and enjoy exploring when I'm getting attacked every few steps of the way.

Also, on a related note, I still don't know how the harpoon gun works. I've tried firing it underwater a few times but I could never get the hang of it, and I don't think I even had enough harpoons for the number of underwater enemies anyway, so I killed all the divers and sharks by finding nearby land where I could just stand there holding down the Ctrl button to keep shooting until they were dead. Very easy, but very time-consuming and boring.

Oh, and I hate the snowmobile controls. I did enjoy shooting enemies from the snowmobile that had a machine gun, or running them over with any snowmobile, but I absolutely hated the parts where I had to jump over gaps with the snowmobile.

I also hated fighting the monks, but that one was my fault for not realizing they were friendly the first time I played it. Oops! XD

And as far the story, I don't really care because I didn't pay attention anyway, but Lara was definitely better in TR1. "Oh Pierre, you litterbug!" is funny and it also warns us in a non-patronizing way that Pierre is already there. In contrast, "Pardon me if that's just your way of trying the doors for me." Wut? Who talks like that? It sounds weird, and it's way too long to be funny. During most of the cutscenes I had to think too hard to understand what they were saying to really absorb the story (either due to the accents or due to saying things in such a weird way). The ending cutscene is my favorite ending in the series though. It's the only one that really surprised me and made me laugh :p

"Pardon me, if that was just your way of trying the doors for me," Lara quips, training her pistols on the man.

"With the tommy gun on my key-ring," he jokes.

"I understand that somehow is in my favor," she says. "So indulge me about the dagger. I'd be indebted with your life."

"Perhaps not just yet, then," Lara says dryly as she holsters he guns and turns away.

"That was gunfire. I think it was them who got taken away by it," Lara explains dryly, crouching to examine the monk's injuries.

"Their Jackanory* days are well over," Lara assures him.

Lara turns back toward him, all zipped up. "The true Dettox** of evil," she affirms.

The dialogues (or in this case, jokes) are dry and ridiculous. They make no sense and I dare say they’re actually a downgrade from TRI. Lara sounds like she’s trying too hard to sound cool...... :vlol:

Yeah, exactly. Admittedly I didn't pay attention to the story in the earlier games because I took way too long on each level to remember what was going on by the time I got to the next cutscene. Having said that, if I watch all of the TR1 cutscenes back-to-back, it's very clear and makes complete sense, and I like Lara's personality. However, if I watch all of the TR2 cutscenes back-to-back, it still doesn't make sense. I need to slowly go through the written transcript and try to figure out what the hell each line means XD And that's true for TR3 as well, especially in the London levels. I swear those mutant guys don't speak English :p

how dare you :knife:
tibet's level design was trash though

Bad story and bad voice acting are pretty much hallmarks to the entire tomb raider series from classics through reboots. Not unique to trii.

Too many bad guys I agree, but I dig the gameplay. Some strong levels after Tibetan foothills too.

Bad voice acting in TRIV-AoD and LAU?

Imho, every other TR game had decent voice acting, just not TRII. Lara herself sounds so boring and elderly, and with the dialogue written for her, I just cringe. The characters’ Italian accents are..... off.
The lack of voice acting quality may be related to Nathan McCree (the composer for TRI-III) giving his voice to the Italians and the Monk. Even TRI had better voice acting than TRII, and that’s saying something.......
