I'm fine with the dialogue in gameplay, I really like Lara giving words of knowledge and pushing herself to do something. But in cutscenes I just don't feel immersed when Lara is talking. Its either picturing Camilla saying the lines or the cutscenes are so bland and animations so ugly that I just do not like watching or hearing Lara in cutscenes. I'm torn if it's knowing Camilla is doing the voice or its just the bad cutscenes. Because thinking about it i've seen lots of interviews with TLoU cast and didn't picture them or think of them at all during the game. So maybe its just the cutscenes. I thought at first maybe they over exposed Camilla as Lara during promotion. I like Camillas voice, but either the script or the way it comes out of Lara's ugly textured, badly synced mouth makes me not like it.

Lara's textures and voice acting was perfect for me ....as well as cutscene animations (they were all motion captured :p) ..but the facial expressions were soo weak (especially when Lara shouts : noooooo , when Roth dies ...) also there were some cheesy lines like the " you're a Croft" ....that's what I didn't like about cutscenes ..

Lara's lip texture was weird. I think they were trying to have it blend with her skin but it just looked fugly. And I know they were motion captured but some times the interaction with the environment and other characters looked off. And I guess that's what I meant, the facial animations were un appealing. I guess that's why I felt nothing for any of the characters. She did show emotion, and you could occasionally see it, but it was poor.

Look at the hand animated face on Ellie's at 3:19. I've never seen a more realistic yawn tbqfh :o

And then look at the scene in this video at 5:58. Jonahs mouth looks like its just going up and down like a ps2 game would do. Everything up close doesn't look as good when playing gameplay.

I frickin love Tomb Raider, the cutscenes were my only problem (and some characters). I enjoy LAU cutscenes more. And I know they are 2 different game companies with different engines but the devs emphasized so much how this mo cap thing was this new genius thing that's going to make us more immersed in the story. That's why I prefer pre rendered cutscenes to in-game cutscenes. Even if the graphics look superb, and even if its more time consuming to create pre rendered cutscenes, the final outcome is more satisfying in the end

What's even more confusing is that the official website says 5'4". Brian Horton designed Lara for this game and somewhere (a podcast or a Q&A, I can't remember exactly) has said she's 5'6". Camilla is also 5'6", if that made a difference for mo-capping, though I doubt it.

@valentino, I thought TLoU was motion captured as well?

larafan25 18-08-13 19:18

^It was, but Naughty Dog hand animate facial expressions.

I am, secretly.

UG. Stop.

Remember when the pre-order DLC was described as a map of "tricky" jumps or something... :(

But it was just a cover up. That sounded soo good.

I know WikiRaider lists her at 5'8" but perhaps that is based on a previous model? It also still lists her cup size as D and her age in the 30s so yeah they haven't updated that in a while.

Rai 18-08-13 19:32

Oh, I see. Well yeah, then the facial expressions are impressive.

On a different note, Rhianna Pratchett tweeted that her boyfriend surprised her while they were at the cinema. Apparently they were watching a cartoon short which Rhianna thought seemed eerily familiar - with good reason, it was a short about their relationship, which ended with a question. I'm gonna assume it was a marriage proposal as she tweets she said 'yes'. How cute is that? .

WikiRaider? Thats such a flop wiki. Tomb Raider doesn't have a good wiki page. Its a mess.

Wow, those facial and body animations in TLoU were amazing! D:

And yeah, the facial and body animations in TR are just pathetic, lol. Like you said, something out of a PS2 game. It didn't stop me from being drawn into the story or anything, though. That was all down to the writing for me. :p

And also, yes, LAU facial animations were WAAAAAY better.

Wow! That is so crazily romantic! How would someone even organize something like that? D:

But yeah, a big congrats to those two, hehe. :D
