I was just able to download TRU DLCs Beneath the Ashes and Laraís Shadow through Microsoft Live to my xBox One (They play as Missions in the main game - but apparently you have to save manually and NOT use the resume button in TRU game.). Excited as I didnít have these w/my original physical copy. :)

Yeah I know quite well, the reviews were all good actually. But the game wouldn't fly today. I wonder why we were so relaxed about it's clunky-ness back then :o

I'm honestly still surprised about the reviews because even at release the game was everything but well polished. But then again Eidos back then made GameSpot fire one of their journalists because he gave Kane & Lynch a (well deserved) negative review, so it's possible that gaming journalists at the time were afraid of Eidos and didn't dare to give their games bad reviews.

Didn't they also block everything below 7/10 for Underworld until release to avoid bad publicity ?
OMG Eidos at that time... Well should I say Eidos everytime.

Koper 14-03-21 12:51

Actually, journalists did criticize back then and said that tr underworld is technically not polished. No reason to blame crystal or eidos. :o

Just look up some reviews from 2008. :)

dg1995 15-03-21 19:26

Even if it was unpolished it delivered a far better experience than AOD for me.:ton:

Now that you mention it, I remember reading something about that at the time. Yeah, Eidos was really shady back then. They were in financial trouble and thought that people would buy their mediocre games when the biggest press outlets didn't mention how mediocre those games were.

The biggest and most influential sites didn't say anything bad about TRU, though.

Maybe it's just me but I think that Eidos' shady moves back then were the beginning of the end of reliable game reviews from the big gaming news sites.

Now I remember it too! But those shady times are not over. For example the cyberpunk reviews.. :o

I think you are not alone with this opinion. The problem with reviews are in my opinion that all journalists are dependent from the big gaming publishers. And if a review is too negative the publisher is not going to provide them with material in the long run. So journalists are indirectly forced to write positively and maybe ignoring some or other things.

BlueCake 13-04-21 20:54

Any news on this? I just wanna complete TRU with the classic outfit.

Larson_1988 05-05-21 07:11

I hope this comes into fruition at some point. :) Also, if it gets released i hope they can add achievements to the Steam version of TRU. :)

tomee 05-05-21 22:26

I'm not gonna get my hopes up, but that would be incredible. Microsoft has in general been a bit more relaxed with their exclusives and allowed a lot of stuff to launch on the windows stores as well. Might be a long shot, but I think this is possible. I hope it works out finally, after all these years.

Heartache 06-05-21 04:53

well they stated again last stream that they are still on it. didnt sound hopeless aswell.

My first experience was on Xbox One and it was okay
But it works on 720p resolution . :(
This is a little annoying compared to the high-definition computer version:confused:
Although the Xbox already works at 4K resolution:mad:
Graphics filtration is too weak, no anti-aliasing

JAMJOOM 08-05-21 00:51

love this

Nice news, I hope it happens

AimlessThunder 15-05-21 13:04

Hopefully they will release updated versions of L-A-U with all the DLC included like Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

JOHN30011887 15-05-21 23:13

^This, and fix a few outfit texture bugs, widescreen issues with next gen in Legend, missing shadows when using the ingame aa, and few other bugs

Whilst this is true, Microsoft also controls a lot of the PC market as well, so it's entirely possible for sure, but I could never see it coming to PS.

andre_costa 24-06-21 13:10

Any news about this?

Would be cool if the DLC was available for Underworld Celebration month.

Meagan confirmed she was actively trying to make it happen. She can't promise anything but I just hope her efforts don't go in vain. :(

Wooxman 01-07-21 08:40

If they do this then it would also be nice to have a new port of TRU to go with it (and maybe also new ports of TRL and TRA while they're at it). :whi: :D

marla_biggs 01-07-21 21:30

I got Underworld for 76p on Steam in anticipation.

Brendanlovesu1 03-07-21 14:27

Meagan mentioned in the chronicles stream yesterday she's still looking into this

This is probably nothing easy because
a) Legal reasons (obviously)
b) The Underworld PC port is rather old and also not that good. They would probably do a new port which makes use of current hard- and software. Maybe they could even manage to unlock the frame rate without the physics going wonky. And when they're doing that, then people would probably also demand new ports of Legend and Anniversary. :whi:
Recently while replaying the old Halo games in the Master Chief Collection on PC I thought to myself that I'm glad that those games weren't ported to PC when they were new because then the ports maybe would've been half-arsed and not the labours of love that they are now that these games are on PC. :D

UroshUchiha 31-07-21 10:24

I havent seen the latest stream yet, but saw summaries from people who watched it and apparently the DLC for Underworld coming to all platforms was mentioned. https://twitter.com/SmashLara/status...660225/photo/1

i would love to know exactly what was said. i don't want needless rumors spreading around. this whole thread spawned from meagan saying "we forward every request to our legal department" and somehow, in the fandom that translated into "they're 100% going to port beneath the ashes, lara's shadow, and the costume pack to pc and they're going to do it soon" when that was not what was being said at all.

The entire broadcast is available here, start around 15:00.

LateRaider 31-07-21 19:46

Thank you, tlr online. Here is my direct transcript of what was being said

Meagan Marie: Um, the other one is kind of a non-update, but I'm--I'm sorry, but I wanted to at least give something. So, for the Tomb Raider: Underworld DLC, we are making progress on the legal side of things. But that's, you know, that's the only update I can say. We're--it's--we haven't forgotten about it, we're still pursuing it. It's something we're really passionate about, and we'll give you updates when we can.

Dallas Dickinson: And folks have--folks have the general context of, o-of, what the, the legal issue space is?

Meagan Marie: Uh, generally, yeah.

Dallas Dickinson: Yeah? Yeah, OK.

Megan Marie: That it was on the Microsoft... yep.

Dallas Dickinson: Exactly, exactly.

Megan Marie: So...

Dallas Dickinson: So, yep. Yep.

AimlessThunder 02-08-21 21:25

It would be so amazing if they also added trophy support and steam cloud saves :).

LateRaider 03-09-21 18:05

I heard there was an update on this during a TR: Legend stream. Does anyone have a source so I can provide a transcription? :)

edit - found it. 25:42 in this video https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1137780863?t=0h25m42s

Meagan: The other... thing, um, we've had lots of questions, so the other update was, we have had a lot of questions on the TR: Underworld DLC. So this is kind of like a, a, a good and a bad. This has been an adventure, so... heh, I learned quite a lot about legal, and development and all this sort of stuff. And the good news is that we made a lot of progress, um, and, and that's really exciting. The challenge is, that this will actually take dev resources to get the DLC... onto another platform, onto PC, u-um, because we have to update control schemes, and Q&A, and all of that kind of stuff. So, we currently don't have the allocate--the resources to allocate, to allocate to that. So, you know, we really, really, really, really tried to see if we could get this to happen this year. Likely... won't. However, um, you know, there--there, you know, we don't have a time frame for it, but things are... things are looking good, but we will, um, likely not have anything this year, and, and we'll try to figure out how we can get resources allocated to that, and--and in the future, it'll be something to look forward to. So, you know, it's--like I said, it's a pro and a con. We're excited that we made progress; we just need to figure out that challenge. Um... yeah.

Obi_Black 04-09-21 08:07

So, in other words - they probably will never bring it to other platforms since it actually requires some additional work. And we thought that legal issues are the only obstacle ;)

Yeah, I guess that's one of looking at it. Quite frankly I do not see them porting it to PC because it's not profitable. Now.. If they decided to remaster L-A-U, that's a different story, because they could do something like Mass Effect did, and re-release all three games on current gen consoles.

honestly yeah. when you see meagan and neha smile and talk frankly it's easy to just take their words at face-value but tbh this is correct.

my guess is, unless this is crowdfunded or they have fans volunteer free time it's never going to come out for PC.

Rickodez 04-09-21 17:33

Capcom did the same for Resident Evil 5.
The DLCs/Gold Edition content was only released on PC 6 years later, and obviously the Gold Edition was more expensive or you could buy the DLC upgrade, so it isn't like they lost money.
It was actually a nice excuse to hike the price of an old game and cool for the fans and game preservation.
It wasn't a new port, on a new engine, with new graphics or anything, it is literally just the DLCs ported to the same old PC port and they removed GFWL to add Steamworks, very simple upgrade, but great for game preservation.
They didn't do it for money, neither lost any i think. It was actually quite effective to promote a ''new PC version of Resident Evil 5, the Gold Edition'', higher price, few more sales than the usual, but it was all old content, and not even a remaster.
https://store.steampowered.com/news/...48831518585296

If SE don't do it, it's because they really don't want to, not because it will be expensive or hard to port, it's not at all. It won't sell much, but will be enough to move a few extra sales and to pay for the job for sure.

LateRaider 05-09-21 05:11

that's a 6 year difference though, 2009 -> 2015. this is potentially a 14 year difference, 2008 -> 2022. and it's not one of square enix's flagship IPs, unlike capcom which are basically all RE, street fighter, and monster hunter.

if this was a final fantasy or dragon quest i'd say maybe it stands a chance but it's just tomb raider, the project-funding-series.

Now that Tomb Raider sold as much as Dragon Quest and currently the second most profitable franchise of Square Enix, if they still don't consider it as a flagship IP this is really desparate...

i'd love to be wrong. if i could be playing the DLC on my PC this time next year i'd be happy

Square has never really cared for Tomb Raider in the same way that they have their own longstanding franchises. They care that it makes them money, that's why the merge with Eidos happened years ago. But on the whole, it's still a western game series that they inherited from Eidos, and they'll keep it around as long as it makes them money.

Bingo. I've long referred to Tomb Raider and Lara as Square's "step-child". They like that they can churn a profit out of it, but it's very clear their passion is not with the franchise.
