Lukass 19-10-12 20:32

^ That pic is hilarious of course.

Bomb Fighter 19-10-12 20:50

TRU Lara in game looks retarded most of the time. The wrinkles on her forehead and wierd mimics...and her yellow skin with no texture...*facepalm.

Lolo Ferrari would like to have a word with you (from beyond the grave).

OK, I just had to Google that to see who the hell Lolo is... and yes, it's making me rethink my statement! ;)

I find this amusing, as what I've seen so far of this "motion capture" is a mess and her face barley moves. I seriously think TRU facial expression were better. Now, look at Enslaved Odyssey To The West. NOW! That's amazingly done facial and body motion capture.

larafan25 19-10-12 22:08

MEH.

I think they're going to be touching up and maybe exagerating some facial movements, I've heard other devs do it like that.

At least the lip movements match and we get expressions, it could be ONE HUNDRED TIMES WORSE LIKE DOA5.

:pi:

Linoshi Croft 19-10-12 22:11

I think its somewhat down to the technology they are using to be honest. It's literally just a camera capturing her face. Where Enslaved had individual muscle and points of the actors faces mapped out.

Sure, but if they can still go in and manually tweak the animation and enhance the articulation themselves, I'm sure it could be just as good.

To me that just makes using the motion capture seem pretty much unnecessary if they can produce better facial expressions in Underworld than untouched actual facial motion capture.

Lukass 19-10-12 22:17

I agree. The facial animations are poor.

Well not if you take real reference footage and add it to the work done in TRU.

Then I assume you get a masterpiece.

just*raidin*tomb 19-10-12 22:19

It seems to me what they're doing is capturing the facial expressions on camera as reference and going back in to match up the animation.

That's what Uncharted does I'm pretty sure.

Yep, something like that.

Linoshi Croft 19-10-12 22:21

Uncharted does it by hand, using reference. Tombraider is actually capturing and using the facial capture. Apparently...

They should of simply used the better technology. Then we'd have the closest to realistic as possible and Lara would really come to life. Unfortunately, with have....well something pretty dire.

Lukass 19-10-12 22:22

In the leaked footage though, the animations seem fine :)

larafan25 19-10-12 22:24

I think the facial animations are great when she's talking to Sam at E3, and at the campfire.

just*raidin*tomb 19-10-12 22:25

I'm fine with the animations. I don't really see the problem. Sometimes they look kind of meh...okay, but they never look awful and generally look good to me.

Yes, they're flawless in that part.

Linoshi Croft 19-10-12 22:26

They are standard at best. I just don't think they accomplish what they set out to do, which is making her feel more real and alive. Something Enslaved did, even with its exaggerated and unrealistic world and situation.

Mm, I've not see that for a long time...but from what I remember it wasn't anything special.

I remember seeing it for the first time and being blown away. But that was over a year ago, so I dunno.

I'm just watching it. It looks 100x better than now. Their facial expressions and the way their lips move is excellent.

Well, I'd love to know exactly what happened...as it's definitely not like that now. :/

The facial animation was amazing there, I don't know why there's such a discrepancy from this scene to the most of the others when it comes to facial animation.

Well if they are touching it up by hand, then they simply might not have gotten to the other scenes I guess. :/

Linoshi Croft 19-10-12 22:32

Let's hope so. Though, I hope they are touching up the campfire scene still too. It's still not up to scratch if you ask me. However, it's pretty impressive in comparison to the rest of it.

I dunno what happened. If you have the video, go and watch it. Compare Roth's and Lara's expressions in that vid to the part of the game with Lara sitting by the fire and talking to Roth via the walkie-talkie. He face and lips barely move...:-/

OMG, I hate that cutscene! It's just abysmal the way her face lacks movement.

IKR? It's hard to tell why that scene looks so bad when the one with Sam is almost flawless.

larafan25 19-10-12 22:36

Maybe, they're touching them up by hand, and didn't get to that scene.

Maybe. Maybe not.

Linoshi Croft 19-10-12 22:37

I seriously don't think they even motion captured that scene and it was literally just a mock up. It's that bad...

larafan25 19-10-12 22:38

Of course maybe not, but if we're going to acknowledge what is good and start assuming the worst, we could still entertain the idea that there will be a positive outcome.

As far as I know animation isn't so redily editable, esspecially in cutscenes. I can be wrong though.

Agree. It does look horrible (for some reason).

January_Snow* 19-10-12 22:40

I think the animations are fine, most people don't move every single muscle on their face when they talk. Like TRU Lara for example, that was exagurated as hell. Lara was smiling, frowning, squinting and raising her eyebrows with every sentence she said. The eyes moving, and lips being in sync with the dialog is more than enough in terms of facial expression, and that's what I think TR is trying to acomplish, less is more.

Peep Show 19-10-12 22:41

Do you guys have the leaked video in HD or what? mine is pretty MQ so the facial animations aren't that visible.

Lara's still not moving her eyebrows every 2 seconds in the leaked video, maybe that's what people want more of.

Her face may seem very still, but we've seen that her cheeks do move, and not everyone has wild expressions./

edit: Roth's wrinkles around his mouth and all do move though, when he winces. Obviously Lara has less wrinkles.

edit: Actually Lara's move too.

Linoshi Croft 19-10-12 22:45

I seriously just want Enslaved level of detail and realism ;__________;
