She should stop contemplating and just do something else already :p

dream raider 28-05-13 23:56

I'd rather the game industry expand a little and allow her (and other writers) to fulfill her creative aspirations, without having to look elsewhere. Why should the gaming industry be inferior in this aspect?

Melonie Tomb Raider 28-05-13 23:57

I'm not a huge fan of games focusing too much on story. :/

But then again, I did like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X for their stories.

Same here. Stories can be interesting, but I hate when they try to act like the story is more important than the actual game. I don't play games for the plot, I play games for fun and exciting gameplay. If I want a good story I'll read a book or watch a movie.

I don't think it's about the story overshadowing the game, just that the story is given enough time and care to work with the game (rather than around it) and be more fleshed out in general.

in KH the story is equally important along with the gameplay

Linoshi Croft 29-05-13 00:11

I think a game can equally have a great gameplay and a great plot. It's just about balance.

I agree. For me, games are meant to be entertainment and I feel that the story is a part of the package. It shouldn't overshadow the gameplay, of course, but a good fleshed out story can help to enhance the experience.

It's a shame that Susan O'Connor feels that she doesn't have enough freedom with her writing to be as expressive as she'd wish. Rhianna Pratchett also feels similarly, I believe, having delivered a speech on the subject and having talked about gaming writers in interviews.

_Ninja_ 29-05-13 00:16

In order to have the freedom you need to be the main designer as well as the writer. Kind of like Ken Levine. He is able to decide how to balance the narrative needs with everything else.

It shouldn't have to be that way though. Rhianna has said that writers are often brought in after the main plot has already been written and they're brought in to tidy up the mess or to just add fillers or something and often only have very short amounts of time to do their stuff. But she added that writers (in games) are beginning to be taken more seriously as games' stories are getting more attention. I'm greatly paraphrasing here. If I could find the video I'm thinking of or an article, I would. It's late here now though, and I'm about to go off to bed.

Nice mod - I love the shorts!

Didn't realize how egg shaped Lara's head was until I saw this though :S Mind taking a pic with the glasses on her head?

Surely CD has a say in what MP DLC gets released?

Anyway; I've come to accept the fact SP is getting nothing. Which is a huge shame.

It's good. Though for personal preference I just don't like reboot Lara in shorts. :pi: it just seems wrong to me. Though well done! It looks great. I wish I could make mods.

And why on Earth would CD hold Eidos Montréal back and disallow them to make DLC? Money is money and EM just happens to have time to develop more maps. It wouldn't sound sensible if CD tried to hold them back.

No, I didn't say CD will hold them back I'm just saying surely they have the right to say 'No don't release that'. Obviously they won't like.

But that's my point. It would be illogac if CD tried to stop EM from releasing DLC.

No, unfortunately only the holder of the rights to TR has that say, and CD don't hold any rights to TR whatsoever. They are held by Square. Square tells both studios what to make, although I think obviously there would be some conversation between the two studios.

Every couple years I always end up doing that. It's great research.

the most sad thing about AOD was her last smile in the ending cutscene...it was like she was saying goodbye to us.....
but thankfully she is still here and i could see a glimpse of what she'll become in the ending scene of the new one...
For me both Laras had a similar smile towards the ending the only difference is that AOD Lara was leaving us and TR reboot Lara is ready to come back and become the tomb raider i know

It's like a poor man's Splinter Cell, and Sam Fisher has been replaced by a whiny, butt hurt emo girl.
