The Golden Mask Playstation Release

Hi everybody,

I'm happy to say that I have ported Tomb Raider II: The Golden Mask to the
Playstation. It was quite a difficult project, and it took quite a bit longer
than I was expecting (I started in February, and only finished the levels in
June). I have built three versions: English (PAL-UK), English (NTSC-US) and
Japanese (NTSC-J). They can be downloaded from my website (b122251.org) under
Tomb Raider -> Games. The Japanese localisation was done by Suikaze Raider,
and I want to express the greatest thanks to him. On the disc can be found a
file called NOTES.TXT in which I go in depth about the course of this project.

This project was originally conceived as a demonstration of what can be done
with a program I have written, which I am also releasing today: tr2pcpsx. Or
"Tomb Raider II PC to PSX Level Converter", which is a sequel to the program I
wrote last year to convert Tomb Raider I levels to the Playstation, and it does
exactly the same, but with Tomb Raider II levels. It can also be downloaded
from my website, under Tomb Raider -> Tools.

Have fun. :)

EDIT: At the request of TombRaiderTim, I added a few screenshots.

Downloading! Congrats on this, it must have been very hard!

michaeldt 24-10-19 12:25

Great to see this done, along with Unfinished Business! :jmp:

Thank you. I would like to clarify that Unfinished Business was done by
Gh0stblade, and this Golden Mask conversion was done by me. There is no
relation between the two projects.

michaeldt 24-10-19 12:56

Do you have any plans for The Lost Artifact? (Is that even possible?)

People said Golden Mask was impossible too, and yet here we are. So I'm
hesitant to make any statements on whether it is or isn't.

Beautiful work b122251 :tmb:

Downloaded..

I have all the GOLD games on PC with the new patches to kind of make it PS1 like..
I still prefer the PSX versions though :)

Can't wait to try this (plus it means I can play it on my mobile phone too)

TheBlueFox 24-10-19 17:14

Thank you for this tool, downloading right now.

TombRaiderTim 24-10-19 17:16

Would it be alright to see a video or two in the OP to check it out before downloading? Maybe a couple of screenshots too! :D

**LARA LOVER** 24-10-19 17:16

Okay stupid question...how do you download this and how would you burn it onto a disk to play on PlayStation?

michaeldt 24-10-19 17:27

you'd need a modded PS1/2 for sure

Sure. That's fine. I'll take some and put them up this evening.

The files are compressed into a 7z file. This can be opened with several archive tools like 7-zip, or WinRAR and such. Inside there are a bin and a cue file,
which can just be burned to a disc using any image burning software. On linux I use cdrdao, on windows you could use something like ImgBurn.
You do indeed need a modded console or equivalent to play it.

Amazing work!! Downloading :jmp:

Sardoc 24-10-19 21:01

Oh, I'm very impressed.

Is this a 1:1 port, or were there any modifications for any reason?

I was kind of hoping people would discover this by themselves and be amazed, but I managed to port all five levels keeping everything intact. No sacrifices had to be made. Every time I hit some wall the PS1 limitations presented me with, I just interpreted it as a need to be more clever. And I always found some trick to squeeze everything into the PS1's limits.

The Golden Mask on PlayStation

Wonderful work! Maybe someday I'll check it on a real console

Well done! :jmp:

At first I thought this was a bump of the very old thread. But here we are. I actually screamed out loud, "Oh my god, you did it?!"

My question is, did you manage to make TRII Gold save data separate from the TRII save data, or does the PS1 think they're the same game? I recall having to make several tweaks to Gh0st's TRI Gold port after I had compiled it to get it to work properly in that regard.

Edit - Ooh, you did! Great work, thank you! :)

Jeff_aod 25-10-19 06:52

Wow! This is really good! Now I can play it on my phone!!

dg1995 25-10-19 08:33

Wow! Great job.

Dermahn 25-10-19 11:19

Amazing work! I had a quick look and I still can't believe someone finally managed to port TR2Gold
I noticed there's no loading screen for the Home level. Is there a reason for this? I know the loading screens sadly never got finished but the Home level loading screen already exists in the base game.
Also what's up with the password protected REV22_21.7Z file on the disc? :ponder:

The reason Lara's Home doesn't have a loading screen is that, since I couldn't
get any loading screens for the levels, I just used the placeholder "LOADING"-
text. It was a bit inconsistent to have a loading image for Lara's Home, but
not for the rest of the levels, so I made Lara's Home use the same placeholder
image.

About REV22_21.7z. I put a few easter eggs in the file data on the disc. Some
of them contain hints on how I managed to make it, others are hints at future
stuff. REV22_21.7z contains a backup of all the project files and patches and
images and tools I used to make Golden Mask. I didn't want to lose these and
the simplest way to guarantee they'll survive is to put them on the disc.
Since it's just wasted space on a CD-R anyway, and the file isn't too big,
I thought it wouldn't do any harm to put it on there. The name is both a nice
little blessing to anybody curious enough to actually look into the files on
the disc, and a hint to myself on how to open it.

Nice work b122251.

Famicom 25-10-19 16:27

This is amazing. Thank you!!! :)

LateRaider 25-10-19 21:41

If it's ok to distribute a bin/cue of tr2gold, can we do the same for tr1gold now or no?

Sarah7777 26-10-19 16:42

I tried to play on Epsxe but when I select new games, just black screen and freezes.

I had the same thing on PC, however on the android version of EPSXE it works.

Ah yes, this is due to a pretty old bug in some PSX emulators, especially
ePSXe. TR2 (and Golden Mask) use CD-audio for the music tracks, but ePSXe
doesn't load these correctly from a bin/cue file sometimes, causing the
game to not find the main theme at the title screen and then it freezes.

When I used ePSXe I solved this by converting it to a PBP file using a
program called PSX2PSP.

annl 26-10-19 17:42

I used ePSXe on PC and it works fine. I used the cue file works fine.

Gh0stBlade 26-10-19 21:46

Excellent work :)

Cheers.

LateRaider 26-10-19 21:54

Ugh, I would love to get this and the UB conversion on my PS3 but the CDDA music is quite a wall in regards to getting it working.

Felix Kroft 27-10-19 17:47

Thank You for this!
I love it.

Amazing work, and right in time for 20 year anniversary of Golden Mask

Such an unexpected surprise.

I prefer to play Tomb Raider on PSX, mostly because it has better atmosphere.

Fingers crossed for The Lost Artifact now :D

SrDanielPonces 27-10-19 21:16

will it work if I burn this to a CD and try it out on my PS?
I have the original TR2 for PSX, if anyone is wondering ::)

You'd need a modded console or equivalent, of course, but yes. If your PS1 can play burned discs, this disc will work.

laracroftswest 27-10-19 23:11

Tried this out on the Playstation Classic. Works just like the first 5 games. It's awesome, thanks so much for doing this!!

jonathanrij 28-10-19 15:09

The way you compressed floor and mesh data is very interesting. I just recently became aware of the engine allowing multiple sector entries to point at the same floor data entry, but I assumed all floor data (in original TR levels) was already written this way.

Anyway, congratulations on achieving this conversion without having to compromise anything. :tmb:

SrDanielPonces 28-10-19 21:38

I remember in unfinished business some enemies had to be taken off, was this the case of golden mask? did some things have to be removed?

Ifrit61 28-10-19 21:46

You never never cease to surprise me... Amazing job, b122251!

Well, I didn't do Unfinished Business (although I'm a bit tempted to make an
attempt at that too and see if I can do it without removing enemies), but for
my Golden Mask conversion I made sure everything was completely intact.
(And yes, that was quite difficult to do.)
