the probable bottleneck
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
to balance that, since you have 32bit, I definitely suggest you try the other kind of installer:
TR1 & UB Vista/7 for 32bit only setup (3 MB)
http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=164519
also available/described here
http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/windows7/tomb-raider-on-windows-7.html
yes it goes for Vista too
because this thing is not so heavy on the cpu as the dosbox based counterpart and shouldn't really be lagging as much

or, sticking with the 1.6 dosbox tool
you can only work the c:\tombraider\dosbox.conf parameters
particularly the output and cycles items are what you may want to fiddle with to have some performance gain
output may be anything in the range: surface,overlay,opengl,openglnb,openglhq,ddraw and direct3d
cycles varying from 10,000 to 200,000
but you'll find most changes to be of little use, I'm afraid and the desired boost in fps hardly impressive.

You may also browse the readme.txt for dosbox, same folder
mostly the "How to run resource-demanding games" section.

I have that version currently and everything works fine except there is choppy sound and I can't play it in full screen mode. I guess I should just suck it up and get over it though, lol :p Thank you for the help though, much appreciated!!

no fullscreen?
you have Intel(R) G965 Express Chipset Family
you sure you identified it right in setup?

have you read what I had posted here about 965 & fullscreen:

Jami393 16-06-10 22:16

Hey Gidierre couldn't you compress it in a 7zip file so it can be easier to download in file size, and quicker to download in time.

gidierre 16-06-10 23:02
Hey Gidierre couldn't you compress it in a 7zip file so it can be easier to download in file size, and quicker to download in time.
no way
as the Inno Setup utility which I've been using for the script-to-installer-exe transition already comes with default compression enabled which, fancy that ;) is just 7-Zip LZMA
and notice that as documentation remarks:
If a compression level isn't specified, it defaults to lzma2/max
in fact if it didn't the total size of it image included couldn't have shrunk from original 600+ MB to <400 MB, admittedly still humongous a chunk to download, but couldn't do better, I'm sorry.

Jami393 16-06-10 23:09

I know what a standard 7zip file is, but what is a 7zip LZMA if you don't mind me asking.

nothing can be as easy as just downloading it and it actually working for once with TR1 -__-

ok so it downloaded ok and i have the 2 icons.. i have the TR1 cd rom in and it still says please insert TR1 blah blah blah then it says then start anew.(idk what that means?) then it says press any key to continue.. and so i do and nothing happens the program just exits out -__-

i have vista 32 bit

help?

Mokono 25-06-10 15:52

Hello!

For some reason, i can't play at 1920x1080; i mean, it does lunch and plays the fmv, but the resolution is always 640x480, which makes the game looks edgy (specially Lara). How can i fix this?

Thanks in advance.

RunrigNutter 25-06-10 16:04

The full resoulution is 1024x768. I dont think you can make it bigger. Gotta ask Giderre ;)

it depends on how you run it
given this thread's subject, based on dosbox 1.6 installer
(if this is what you're using which I feel is not or else you wouldn't go plain 640x480 VGA)
implies you'll have to open the *.conf files you find in \tombraider
edit the fullresolution= entry to... what?

well this thing might help:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Vector_Video_Standards2.svg

you must respect the 4:3 ratio and move up to the highest rank (red square) your display will safely take
e.g for your HD 1080
you can try SVGA, XGA, SXGA+ and :p obviously not UXGA
so go and e.g. just set fullresolution=1280x960
save and look until you find what suits you best.

help?
if you must start anew then I'm afraid you'll just have to start over
but if the TR1 cd is in you're not supposed to go through that

what's going wrong maybe can be divined through more info
like the inevitable diagnose.exe report
and first after a glance at the cdrom files, like is that a sold-out version (I don't think it is) or what?

that can be also made by typing at the prompt from cdrom root something like
dir /s > c:\listing.txt
and then posting this listing text file contents

or maybe through a windows explorer right pane screenshot, cdrom drive selected, in full details view, and that goes for all subfolders too, I'm sorry.

I'm having the same problem with resolution. I changed the fullresolution in all 3 *.conf files to 1400x1050 and it changes the resolution of FMVs, but not the game itself.

adamtombraider 04-01-11 01:42

The game loads up with dosbox set from the link in post 1 tombraiderhub but its does not show game play just a black screen but I can hear everything just can't see the game

yeah, it figures
quoting the glide wrapper maker's own words:
- When glide is active, the wrapper is in control of the DOSBox window. This means that DOSBox window related options (resolution, scaler, ...) do not work
taken from the specific thread
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=16462

now, a Highres rendering patch is in the works, not (yet) officially included in the binaries:
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=26313

it's only 2 months old and I haven't tried it myself
other than the diff file to browse, its author has posted a compiled version of the glide dll for everyone to try
otoh while Dosbox has been updated to v0.74 the relevant glide patch hasn't so far, so you could only try the cvs...
this seems promising and ought to let users enhance resolution ingame hopefully soon
The game loads up with dosbox set from the link in post 1 tombraiderhub but its does not show game play just a black screen but I can hear everything just can't see the game
using v1.6? or v1.5?
you should try and uninstall/redownload/reinstall it all in the first place
other than this, more info about your hardware and stuff (diagnose.exe report) would be required to start addressing the issue

noname 04-01-11 19:04

Nevermind, I tried it with nGlide and it works.

noname 05-01-11 03:42

Though there's another problem. There's a weird brown line that appears around objects, and the outline around Lara is jagged as well:

http://i54.************/2v29ykp.png
http://i56.************/2nknbb8.png

It happens sometimes without nGlide, but with nGlide it happens more often.
Though there's another problem. There's a weird brown line that appears around objects, and the outline around Lara is jagged as well
I know, I know
it's funny, because that's just what I wanted to reply knee-jerk to your post, but I was reluctant to as I hate to criticize other programs
now that you mentioned it I can confirm it happens here too,and just as you remarked: with nGlide it happens more often

either you try that new hires dll build by gulikoza, or if you're familiar with dosbox you go build your own through sources, not the .diff file which is but a sort of changelog so you know what's going on, like this snippet about how it handles the new per user config resolution parameter (you see values 1 through 16 are what can come through):
+ // Set the size of the OpenGL window (might differ from Glide window size)
+ if (UserConfig.Resolution == 0)
+ {
+ // Use the resolution requested by the game
+ OpenGL.WindowWidth = Glide.WindowWidth;
+ OpenGL.WindowHeight = Glide.WindowHeight;
+ }
+ else if (UserConfig.Resolution <= 16)
+ {
+ // multiply the original size by the resolution factor
+ OpenGL.WindowWidth = Glide.WindowWidth * UserConfig.Resolution;
+ OpenGL.WindowHeight = Glide.WindowHeight * UserConfig.Resolution;
+ }
+ else
+ {
+ // override the resolution
+ OpenGL.WindowWidth = UserConfig.Resolution;
+ // Glide games have a fixed 4/3 aspect ratio
+ OpenGL.WindowHeight = UserConfig.Resolution * 3 / 4;
+ }
I mean you'd build the full dosbox.exe from svn sources which are freely available
or else, wait for the release of a full fledged 0.74 compliant version of the whole glide patch

btw there's another chance, the dosbox unofficial version by ykhwong which is a 0.74 thing plus assorted tweaks who didn't make their way (yet?) to the official release
that could be plainly copied onto the tombraider folder overwriting all
of course, no guarantee it will do :p, but could be tried.

noname 05-01-11 17:41

Yes, gulikoza's hires dll works better, thank you. Though there is one glitch that using nGlide got rid of, which is where objects like doors, blocks, and pickups sometimes show through walls. I can't show you an example because screenshots also don't work. :P

gidierre 05-01-11 18:20
objects like doors, blocks, and pickups sometimes show through walls
oh no, not the depth buffer conundrum again :(
do you happen to have an Intel gfx card?
I need to know

at any rate, on the tombraiderhub page
http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/tr1_adv.html
scroll down to:
Depth buffer issues on x64 version
and read the simple "cure" I'd found for it

and if it doesn't fix a thing and/or it's no Intel card you got, what brand is it then?

noname 05-01-11 19:27

I've got an ATI Radeon X1650.

Also, there's a bug where the game crashes once in a while when I try to access the menu (happened with nGlide also).

That one happened to me as well. Try to save frequently.. If the game crashes, at least the last successful save was not a very long time ago...

in fact a common if desultory occurrence, at least with 21st century hardware in general
I've got an ATI Radeon X1650
if there's no fixing the bit depth of that buffer or if the instructions (obv. customized for the Catalyst control panel vs Intel's) won't apply, there's always the chance the artifacts you see are not the evil kind as reproduced e.g here to make sure we're talking about the same business, but of the occasional, more rare and erratic type which imho is well depicted in a case like this one from Stella's TRUB walkthrough (Shadow of the cat) having no solution afaik

..or else those Ati drivers have problems with z-buffering :confused:

noname 05-01-11 22:30

Mine is more similar to the first screenshot. So is there anything I can do to fix it? I found a setting for OpenGL triple buffering but enabling that didn't do anything.

gidierre 06-01-11 03:07
Mine is more similar to the first screenshot
to be sure it's like that and is reproducible go to Lara's home, the room with the blue mat facing the stairs that the screenshots mentioned in my post above show, what does it look like?
So is there anything I can do to fix it? I found a setting for OpenGL triple buffering but enabling that didn't do anything.
triple buffering has little to do with this, it's the depth buffering
for Ati read here
http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_8.html
(More Settings -> Force 24-bit Z-Buffer depth)
if you can't spot it or fix it in the Catalyst Control Center for some reason, please check your \tombraider\openglid.ini file that came with the installer
in there there's one EnablePrecisionFix=1 line right? it's got to be =1

alternatively, if there is a real problem with z-buffering after all I can send you a different build of the glide dll that's apt to address any issues w/depth buffering programmatically whatever the card just forcing 24bit precision for good (hopefully :cln:)

HTH

noname 06-01-11 03:44

In Lara's Home if I stand back far enough I see the railing appear through the wall similar to the screenshot, but it doesn't appear in back of Lara and I don't see the chandelier and the railings on the other side of the room. The EnablePrecisionFix=1 line is there in openglid.ini and there is no More Settings in Catalyst Control Center for me.

gidierre 06-01-11 04:29

so in your CCC 3D setting menu beside triple buffering etc. there's no such thing as Force 24-bit Z-buffer depth or something to that effect?
something like this under API specific, I mean
that's strange

sounds like this discussion to me doesn't it:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1538771
I have the same problem with the Radeon X1950 Pro 512 mb.
In catalyst in the opengl setting there is only the option for triple buffering. No force 24-bit Z-buffer depth option
...
I'm pretty sure the problem is with the 24bit depth buffer, but I can't find a way to change it in the Catalyst software for the ATI card.
not TRI-related, it's true, but probably relevant

I wonder if a drivers' update might be convenient if possible

or if you want I can fetch that uber-glide2x.dll and upload it for you to test it, it won't hurt trying :)

noname 06-01-11 04:46

I already updated the drivers about 3 months ago, so I guess I'll try the patched glide2x.dll. Will it still have the ability to change resolution?

gidierre 06-01-11 14:42
I'll try the patched glide2x.dll. Will it still have the ability to change resolution?
surely not since it was made before the resolution customization
in gulikoza's words
[this version is] a fix in openglide. By default 16-bit Z-buffer was requested from OpenGL. Now, a 24-bit buffer is requested if available, if not precisionfix is used (this fix was always disabled previously). So in a way, glide is now forcing 24-bit Z-buffer and control panel option in not required...
the purpose of trying is mostly to see if by this depth artifacts are gone
if not, I'm afraid the fault is in the card or I'd say the drivers
I remember such an issue (but it was an Intel card back then) and since it was a laptop and I guess you know how hard it its to update drivers for them a sort of modded driver change did the trick, like those modded releases that go for GeForce's. I don't know about Ati though.

Link to the dll:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=I8LTNZ3D

noname 06-01-11 18:12

Nope... doesn't change anything.

gidierre 07-01-11 00:51

so there are problems and they can't be addressed forcing the 24bit buffer value, maybe this changes with different driver generations?
as you probably know sometimes such settings need some registry tweaking to reappear, but one has to know where (what key) if any to edit..

as I said I know of modded drivers (unofficial) releases for Intel & nVidia (mostly useful for laptops sometimes), but I don't know about Ati
I somehow remember one such site for those, but I think it was not updated anymore

EDIT
have you taken a look at this page?

btw if your windows 7 or whatever is 32bit you could also try the other installer not based on dosbox, same tombraiderhub page, useless for 64bit
since the emulating software is different, especially so for the video part, it's possible those artifacts will go and otoh for sure dgVoodoo has let users crank up the resolution for a long time (dgvoodoosetup.exe/Glide tab)

noname 07-01-11 01:55

Still no luck, if I even have that program running Dosbox will crash as soon as I try to launch the game.

Btw, I'm now using an ATI Radeon HD 4290, still has the same problem though.

gidierre 08-01-11 14:47

well probably that ATI Tray Tools tool is a bit out-of-date now

so ATI Radeon HD 4290 makes no difference either and I assume the Catalyst Control Center misses the z-buffer option as well :mad:
btw are you on 64bit then?

anyway I expect to find a pc with an Ati gfx card soon to test things a bit on it so when/if I come up with something I'll post what I can say about it.

gidierre 10-01-11 00:14

Made some tests, thx to a relative lending me for a few hours a HP laptop from 2010 running on Win7 64bit and equipped with 2 gfx cards and ATI PowerXpress software which lets you switch from an Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (Driver version: 8.712.0.0) to an Intel gfx media accelerator
so I installed v1.6 and using Radeon 5470 noticed that no depth artifacts appeared as can be seen in this screenshot (sorry for the poor quality due to time shortage):

except that... :tea:
moving around as distance increased they did show up after all, but only when 5 "squares" or so removed from the "critical" surface, in this case the wall and the poles in the room beyond as I tried to show in following screen:

just for the record, I checked again on a different pc with nVidia GeForce mobile 8600M GS and definitely no depth issues, not even backing off as far as I could from that wall i.e. up to the opposite wall: no poles (didn't bother to take screens there)

I went ahead instead on the Ati machine, but swapping gfx to the Intel adaptor through ATI PowerXpress and to my surprise, no artifacts, even if I made sure to back away farther than the spot where they started to show with the Radeon, as hopefully the following screen will demonstrate comparing positions vs. the pool's edge

Does this mean Intel is better than Ati here? Obviously not really.
Not to mention that Intel will detectably slow things down, see the fps figures in screens?
21 frames/sec vs. 29 frames for Ati so game lags using Intel, although there might be room for optimization here customizing settings especially to improve performance with Intel which I had no time to try.

Graphics-wise anyway, as a matter of fact Intel clearly takes advantage of the force 24-bit Z-buffer depth hack that the dll implements and the Ati seems averse to
if Intel's buffer can be raised from 16bit to 24bit, it's unclear how Ati handles the buffer on its own, whether 16bit (which I doubt it is, and it wouldn't explain why the precision fix won't work then) or >=24bit (so the hack wouldn't stick, but then there ought to be no issues in first place)
for sure Catalyst Control Center has no way of changing it as opposed to earlier Catalyst drivers' versions I saw

that the problems should come with distance is interesting, but surely no surprise:
http://www.opengl.org/resources/faq/technical/depthbuffer.htm#0070 read e.g. here
12.040 Depth buffering seems to work, but polygons seem to bleed through polygons that are in front of them (...) As the ratio (zFar/zNear) increases, less precision is available near the back of the depth buffer and more precision is available close to the front of the depth buffer. So primitives are more likely to interact in Z if they are further from the viewer.
and here (the 65,535 number applying to 16bit buffer)
12.050 Why is my depth buffer precision so poor? (...) Everything at eye coordinate depths from -395.9 to -1000 has to map into either 65534 or 65535 in the z buffer. Almost two thirds of the distance between the zNear and zFar clipping planes will have one of two z-buffer values!
the sketchier the calculations, the fuzzier things get at a distance
to the point of some short but harsh "fits" of z-fighting

nothing special it's true, since I had already quoted some useful links months ago
like this and this.

Hi, same thing happened to me. To fix it just need to press the F3 key (on/off antialiasing) in the game. I think it's a problem with antialiasing 3dfx patch and modern hard.

Look:

and after pressing F3:

My game run with TR1 1.6dosbox installer (thanks!!!!!) and nglide at high resolution (1680x1050)
The only bad thing is you can not control the gamma and colors are very washed.

PD: Sorry for my english

gidierre 17-01-11 00:28
To fix it just need to press the F3 key (on/off antialiasing) in the game
yep
the point in above discussion wasn't about the fix itself, but only that it's more often seen using nGlide
The only bad thing is you can not control the gamma and colors are very washed
gamma can be optimized using dgVoodoo i.e. through the Advanced Installer (not for Vista and 7) or the other installer based on it (dgVoodoo) as opposed to dosbox (for Vista/7, but not for the 64bit versions)
actually where I most needed a gamma customization in all these years has been just with dgVoodoo vs. Glidos & dosbox

remember that if you have a 64bit OS so no chance to try dgVoodoo in any installer way, you can still try to improve/customize rendering in dosbox
it's strongly dependant on your graphics adaptor and can be edited in the dosbox .conf (configuration) files, in the following section
[sdl]
# output -- What to use for output: surface,overlay,opengl,openglnb,openglhq,ddraw,direct3d.
according to your hardware capabilities some setting will break it , some may improve colors, all values beside direct3d can apply
worth having a go at it anyway.

I installed the Installer but the programme still asks me to "Insert Tomb Raider 1 CD" even though it is there. What should I do?

EscondeR 25-01-11 09:38

1. What version of the installer did you use?
2. Is your game localized one (non original English)?

3. Run TRCheck and Diagnose.exe and post both reports here.
