What we know

Returnal is a sci-fi psychological horror/action shooter with roguelike elements from the third-person perspective. The game was announced on June 11, 2020, at the PlayStation 5 virtual conference, Future of Gaming. It was released on April 30, 2021. The game was exclusively developed for the PlayStation 5. The player will control Selene, a female space pilot who is stranded on an alien world and stuck in a time loop. After every death, she is resurrected, following a pattern of traversing across foreign environments with vivid visions in an ever changing world.

Synopsis

After crash-landing on this shape-shifting world, Selene must search through the barren landscape of an ancient civilization for her escape. Isolated and alone, she finds herself fighting tooth and nail for survival. Again and again, she’s defeated – forced to restart her journey every time she dies. Through relentless roguelike gameplay, you’ll discover that just as the planet changes with every cycle, so do the items at your disposal. Every loop offers new combinations, forcing you to push your boundaries and approach combat with a different strategy each time. Brought to life by stunning visual effects, the dark beauty of the decaying world around you is packed with explosive surprises. From high stakes, bullet hell-fuelled combat, to visceral twists and turns through stark and contrasting environments. You’ll explore, discover and fight your way through an unforgiving journey, where mystery stalks your every move. Designed for extreme replayability, the procedural world of Returnal invites you to dust yourself off in the face of defeat and take on new, evolving challenges with every rebirth.

Development

Set in a futuristic science fiction alien world, the player navigates a female space pilot traversing through unfamiliar environments and extraterrestrial entities with high-tech weapons and an armored combat suit. The game takes advantage of the PlayStation 5's Dualsense controller and Tempest Engine to support advanced haptic feedback, 3D spatial audio, and real-time ray tracing effects, enhancing the player immersion experience. With the increased processing power and inclusion of a custom solid state drive storage in the PlayStation 5, the game features reduced loading times and a wide variety of enemies, visual effects, and objects within gameplay scenes. Additionally, the game runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. Returnal features an original score composed primarily by Bobby Krlic.

Quote:

- Fight to survive in this third-person roguelike shooter
- Take on ruthless enemies in explosive, bullet hell-fueled combat.
- Manage equipment and resources carefully – every time you die, you restart from the beginning.
- Scavenge alien tech for upgrades to enhance your abilities in future cycles.
- Piece together fragments of Selene’s memories as she seeks out answers.

uhhmm...

Oh man, permadeath. Hmmmm, I mean Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice did the same thing, granted it was a relatively short game. So as long as there are enough difficulty settings and the game isn't crazy long it might be okay. That is pretty wild though.

Pretty game though.

The look of it and the premise - "search through the barren landscape of an ancient civilization for her escape. Isolated and alone" - I find really interesting.

I'm not sure about having to restart the cycle thing though.... But I'm still probably going to get it.

Not to bitch, but

- this game clearly screems hip fire, yet this gameplay doesn't show it

- I hate it when sound goes poof on low health. I understand that that's how losing consciousness sounds like , but you're basically depriving me of sound cues when I need 'em the most.

Previews are out

Don't trust the guy's opinions, he can get very sentimental sometimes...
he's quite good at using words to describe what a certain game plays like though, which is the only thing I look for in a (p)review.

The game looks fun & interesting, I think I'll wait for when it goes on sale though.

I saw someone refer this game as Karen in Space & it lives rent-free in my mind. :vlol:
