The Lost Artifact PS1 Conversion

Hi everybody,
I'm pleased to announce Tomb Raider: The Lost Artifact for the Playstation.
This is a project I have been working on for many months now, and the project is
nearing completion. I usually don't make announcements of my projects, but I
know that a lot of you have been hoping for a PS1 version of this game for a
long time. So for now, have some screenshots.

Deactivated.

TheBlueFox 19-05-21 11:08

This is a truly amazing work, congratulations! :)
I'm wondering how could you convert Zoo.tr2, since the file is around 4mb...

Are you using the same mesh and floor data compression that you used in TR2 GM port? Also, Is the format very different? I'm intrigued.

Greenapple968 19-05-21 11:24

I've never played any of the golds but the images look very good, impressive work. :tmb:

CircusBabysGal 19-05-21 12:21

Omg Omg Omg Yesss! This is a perfect way to preserve TLA!

jonson 19-05-21 13:25

Nice! I think the TR3 The Lost Artefakt levels are even better than some of the main TR3 levels. Definitely one of my favorite parts of TR Classic! I am looking forward for your PSX port.

laracroftswest 19-05-21 13:34

Yesssssss!! This is so exciting.

Guy N. Cognito 19-05-21 14:08

Oh my God! Good job, man.
Now we're complete :D

xdesperado_ 19-05-21 14:44

This is fantastic news, great work! :jmp:

I have to admit I never got to experience TLA in full, I only played the Highland Fling PC demo many years ago.

Teeth 19-05-21 18:00

Very nice work :D

I want to play this now just for the added challenge of getting through the whole thing with save crystals.

Do you normally play on the PC where you have unlimited saves and the crystals are health crystals?

LateRaider 19-05-21 19:06

oh my god, this is amazing!!! they said it couldn't be done and once again you deliver. thank you so much!!!

Like me, are you a PS player who has never played any of the golds before?

Teeth 19-05-21 21:23

You need to play the Gold games, Greenapple. There are so many cool, rewarding secret areas; I always say you discover something new with every playthrough. It's also fun to see the creative ways they attempt to tell a story through the level design.

If you get TR1 and 2 on Steam you can download their expansions for free. Good luck finding The Lost Artifact, though...

Aren't the golds included with the PC games for TR1-TR3?

Kirishima 19-05-21 21:43

Not for TLA. It was completely standalone, and never included in any sort of bundle with 3.

It is really not hard to find now! *cough* archive org historical collecting. I thought I had a combo tr3tr3g english release but it's a bootleg - the japanese combo I have though is definately official! Some other languages may have been too.

So glad to see this on its final stretch! Looking forward to it :D

i've played all of the golds on PC but i would love to be able to put TR1, 2, and 3 gold and The Times Level on my soft-modded PS3. it's more comfortable for me to veg out on my bed rather than sit at my pc. and i can't set up my room in a manner where i can plug my pc into my tv unfortunately

lance6439 20-05-21 01:43

looks beautiful

I see. Well I'm yet to play the golds and it would be nice to be able to play them. I could even do Blind LPs for them if I was able to play the games.

angelhp 20-05-21 19:54

Omg! this is impressive, with this project the complete classic saga of Lara on ps1

TombHackR 20-05-21 21:49

I am lost for words.
I always thought that a Lost Artefact PlayStation port was simply impossible and never ever going to happen, let alone Golden Mask and Unfinished Business.
I am seriously impressed.

sliderman 21-05-21 07:05

Omg!! I love playing your ports on my retroid! You are a king/queen! Can't wait 😍🤩

Actually the premier collection for the first 3 games (which I own) have the expansions included including TLA. Though TLA did also have a standalone release.

Get on it! The Gold games got some of the best levels of the whole franchise. Why are you not able to play them?

I've never played a PC game before; that's why I've never played the golds before. There are also some personal circumstances stopping me from doing the things that I would like to be doing right now.

Kirishima 23-05-21 20:09

@medioka_music

That likely never got released where I lived then. I've seen a Tomb Raider Gold bundle and Tomb Raider 2 Gold bundle out in the wild at the time, but never TLA bundled with 3.

Mine are all UK releases so no idea if those pertain to you. Afaik all the golds got released with the main games, the difference is that TLA is the only one with a standalone release since it was marketed as a proper mini sequel to TR3 instead of just being extra levels.

mizuno_suisei 23-05-21 22:07

Wanted to recheck my collection today after the comments here.

The premiere collection - bundle
Japanese collection (red) bundle
One individual release was a bundle- UK. tr3 and tr3g only. It's not the usual cover art - just Lara on a very dark/,almost green backdrop. *edit* I'm now suspecting this is US as it says artifact

So there are atleast, two English released bundles.

Also did a quick Google search for Tomb Raider 3 Premier Collection and dozens of results show up. The ones I have are basically black cases with the respective game cover for the UK. Will post a picture later.

*EDIT*
As promised some pictures of the copies I have.

Whoa, nice one.

Out of curiosity... are the levels 1:1, or were there some cuts, splits or other compromises?

CheshireBitch 25-05-21 10:10

It looks really great ! Amazing work !

Did you add some extra crystals ?

Admles 27-05-21 10:25

Please be careful of image sizes folks, post them as links if they are too big.

Defrago 29-05-21 19:54

As always, impressive work, b122251!

The only thing left is to find a way to convert PS1 levels to PC to convert, for example, Japanese levels due to their unique geometry

Been over this before - same with TR1JPS1 and that tomb of qualopec extra area. I'd love to rip the Japanese tr3 levels back to PC but B said this was impossible at present. ;( but eugh I'd kill for their unique maps. Truly!!

HarleyCroft 06-06-21 16:09

Whoa is this really a thing that happened??

Well done, b122251! :tmb: Thanks for sharing

ReH_ 06-06-21 20:49

Oh, my!
Awesome news!

laraxtombx 16-07-21 11:33

This is very nice, any update?

Not being impatient but I'm just curious why these ports seem so troublesome and time consuming, could you describe the process of porting the levels? Is it just a matter of converting or compressing files, or do you have to manually make a lot of changes, or cut anything?

These conversions take a huge amount of work. First the level converters had to be written, to convert the levels from PC-format to PSX-format. This has been done, but it took several months.
After that came the problem that every single level was too big to convert 1-to-1. So I had to invent trick after trick to fit the levels into the PS1's limited memory without losing anyhting. This has now succeeded for every level (except Sleeping with the Fishes, which still causes trouble and crashes).
Then there is also the problem of the enemy A.I. for Sophia Leigh being different on TLA than it was on TR3.
And then there's still the simple mundane things like disc building, modifying gameflow, etc.

Sorry to keep all of you waiting, but it really is a lot of work.

LateRaider 19-07-21 18:20

don't worry b, i understand how long it takes to do these things. i dont expect this to be out until early next year
