That's the patronizing low end US TV/movie influence - they treat the audience as dimwits who need to have everything explained out loud for them to understand the plot and what the character is feeling. Of course any halfway intelligent viewer/player doesn't need this to be able to imagine that.

Maybe once have the character verbalise what they're thinking but in video games the same lines being repeated multiple times, as so often seems to happen, gets annoying very quickly.

Silence can speak volumes. It also allows the background sounds to create the atmosphere and sense of isolation that these original games did so well either by accident, design or due to technical limitations. Whatever the reason: it works.
