Honestly long-running franchises are just prone to become less and less relevant over time.
Doom 2016 and especially Doom: Eternal want to have a word with you. I think that experimenting with long running series isn't as risky as a lot of people are thinking. That's probably just marketing talk from developers and publishers who are too afraid to not play it safe. Capcom made the bold choice to make Resident Evil 7 in first person and it became a success. Sure, it wasn't really that innovative since Slender and Outlast started the trend of first person horror games, but it was still risky to make this in a long running and established series.

The analogue controls are even worse than playing with a d-pad. If you move the left stick just slightly to the left or right, Lara will do a sidestep. Of course that gets in your way a lot if you just try to turn Lara just a little bit to the left or right. If you just move the stick slightly forwards, Lara will walk instead of run, which works much better and is more in line with how analogue controls evolved. But the sidestep mechanic completely screws this up and other than that, analogue sticks are far less precise for tank controls like those in the classic TR games.
