It was, this was during the time Core was developing different designs for Melissa, so I can only assume once assets were handed over to Crystal Dynamics, they discovered the concept art for her and then re-used that as their own character which ended up being Amanda herself.

This was also when Legend was well into production though, your timeline doesn't match up.

How can Core's Amanda concept be handed over to crystal after AE was cancelled mid-late 2005, and then have her so integral and complete when Legend was basically done that year? (I assume the last six months before the mid 2006 release were polishing, bugfixing, and making the last minute Xbox 360 port.)

Legend was complete enough during AE's production that Core were given orders to make their game look more like Legend. We have no screenshots or art of a model that doesn't look like that aside from the AOD model in Free Running, so it's likely that order came before the new character designs.

Logically, that leads me to believe it's much more likely Amanda was included in the Legend material Core were given to work from, and the AE concepts of her are just them toying with the idea of using her.

Yeah, Core's remake started while Legend was being made, that's why the 3D model for Lara looks a lot like early Legend Lara.

As for Crystal "using" Core's concept art, well it's possible, but I also think they wanted to do what they did with Lara -> use similar looking things so people doesn't get confused.

About Melissa I never understood her look. I think Core wanted to make her different so she's not a Lara clone, but it was way too much. They could have made her more girly, or even more sporty then Lara, but that Melissa outfit is just... it feels like it came from a manga.

So they thought the concept art in question was meant for Melissa and then reused for Amanda by Crystal. But it was meant for Natla, not Melissa.

TBH I think they would have changed it a lot, that was just a concept art.

They would not have changed it. And yeah, it was a bit much. TBH, Melissa was the one part of TRAE that I was never really onboard with but then she was only there for the multiplayer component and wouldn't have been featured in the story so I don't care all that much.

I’m not about that either. There are a couple of visual cues that I like about the design, but most of it just looks like Core were inspired by the skater phase and decided to do something with it.

It would have been better if you could play as Natla, one of the goons, or some other person entirely imo.
