They did.
Part of the description from the Croft manor is actually in Tomb Raider Underworld, and not Tomb Raider Legend. (Amanda tearing up Croft Manor). They've planned this, a long time. I think that the reason why we have never seen Amanda inside Croft Manor, is because this scenario was part of the early stages of Tomb Raider Legend, so they couldn't do that with Tomb Raider Underworld. I don't think that back then they were gonna use the dopplegänger to carry out that scenario, but differently. Also I think that they've wanted Amanda's scenario, to break in Croft Manor, to be playable, which is probably why we didn't see much of her in Croft Manor and why Amanda is playable in Tomb Raider Legend.

Maybe they've thought that she played too similar like Kurtis, but female, and a... blonde. But I, especially after the Arctic Sea level, would have liked to try out how Amanda is playable with her Wraith Stone.

Very facinating to watch. It's what i've been hoping for for a while, the heads of the studio talking in depth about what Tomb Raider was and where they decided to take it and what the motivation behind their decisions was.

The Casino Royale analogy was interesting considering if you watch that movie, he may not be 100% classic Bond but there is a lot of classic Bond characteristics in there. Especially during the poker scenes, they were still sure to communicate that this IS still James Bond.
Whereas the main characteristics of Lara Croft that Meghan detaled rather well were pretty much absent from 2013, they tore the character down completely and started again. Which might have worked had she very gradually developed her poise and confidence through the game(s) but she didn't.

She did, there was a lot of messages by various members explaining how she has evolved in threads.

She isn't afraid of the unknown after 2013, she battle her inner demons in the comics and the novel after she escape of the atrocities on the Island.

She's willing to go on a journey alone in Rise and rediscover the past she had burried for years and make her own choices in Shadow. Also she's more open to be with the peoples around her since she's an introvert person. She also learned to accept her own family legacy and embrace herself and enjoying life like when she was a child. It's a big accomplishment from a human perspective.

It's not really in your face I must admit but those moments exist.

Period cause Crystal’s Anniversary game looks so much like Core’s

Did core really say that it was stolen from them because of CD? We need some actual receipts.

I mean how would you feel being replaced by the new hot sensation, the minute the rug has been pulled under you? Probably like **** too. It's hard to say if this statement was made rationally, or just entirely out of spite.

I remember it, and the context is just pretty damning over all.

I think it's safe to say that Crystal Dynamics as a whole very clearly demonstrated in this documentary that they have absolutely no idea what they're doing when it comes to Tomb Raider. I don't think the most important thing by far was mentioned by a single one of them. Understanding the appeal of Lara Croft and trying to stay true to it.

Whether they are aware of why Lara was such an icon in the 90's seems almost irrelevant at this point. They aren't interested in it and clearly never will be. They're gonna do what they wanna do and slap 'Tomb Raider' on it to help it sell.

They wanted to tell an origins story as it was a trendy thing going on back then with other franchises. Everything needed to fit in that origin scope so they couldn't really do any of the classic stuff because it would overshadow the story arcs they were setting up for Lara.

And it was the absolute right thing for Tomb Raider at that point in time, it saved the franchise if only temporarily. I had an absolute blast with 2013 and Rise.

There's really no way of truely knowing how successful classic Lara in a big release would be today. But I think Bayonetta 3 has been a decent measurement of how much appeal that kind of character still has with general gaming audiences.
And it feels like there's definitely a big gap in the market for more larger than life female characters like that at the moment.
If they went for it (which they won't) they would have to go big or go home. Lara would have to be sassier and sexier than she ever was back then. She'd have to come out of the gate with something worth trending.
