The gore sets the unforgiving, survival tone of the reboot games. I haven’t read the article, but if it boils down to Lara’s gender, then it’s probably better I don’t.

They fail to see that this is simply an evolution in technology and Core were doing the same thing, just with less at their disposal. Lara falling in spikes was always incredibly brutal, as well as falls from great heights. Think of the Great Pyramid in TR1. They make you sit through the entire fall in the chamber just to see her catch on fire when she crashes to the ground. In Shadow most long falls just show her falling and then fade Out.

They're on different levels though.

There is quite the difference between the TR1/TR2013 spike death animation.

Due to technology and their limitations. They’re literally the same, only now we have a grey filter with some blood splatters on the screen.

Nope.
Lara falls into spikes and sinks down a bit in a somewhat crouched position. (TR1)

Lara somehow always falls throat-only onto a spike and gurgles for several seconds while grabbing the spike. (2013)

But this article is more in reference to Shadow. They don’t get that gruesome.

I personally don’t like the change of camera for her death animations because it always seems like they are focusing on here being impaled
And maybe it’s because we don’t really see the same brutality in her enemies when they die in combat. It’s almost like they only like brutally killing Lara. I liked 2013 because hey showed that rapist getting his head blown out so I was able to see someone else getting what they deserved.
While there are blood infested waters and other bodies in the new games I just want to alive people getting brutally impaled to even out the field and make it not seem like Lara is the only one.

Edit: like Lara’s finishers don’t have the same impact to as when she fails a sequence.

I disagree. Lara's death scenes are awesome. I fail to see how are they related to torture-porn - because she's a female character?

They also mentioned in the article that it's weird seeing those scenes because Lara is a female. I mean, wtf? It's M rated game, I wanna see some gruesome scenes, no matter if it's a male or a female character.

Since the death is so brutal, you try harder not to see
the animation again.

This article failed.
This argument is addressed and shut down in the article. Did you read it?
