Isn’t there a line like “i have business here, I cant leave yet” that could be triggered if the player forgot to pick up the painting from the machine?

Maybe I guess but I'm not sure how that could be done at the moment. The game currently doesn't seem to care if you got the painting back or not.

Here is how it works in the PS2 version. You can actually see the scanning process in this, I suspect it's missing in the PC version because they didn't make that texture on the desk transparent so you can't see it. Strangely though the metallic symbol is missing in this version.

The thing where Lara grunts after picking it up sounds like it's in reverse with the scanning process. If the monitor blew up or something, it makes much more sense that Lara would've been pushed back by that than picking up the painting.

So basically -> Place the painting -> Scan -> Monitor blows up, pushing Lara back -> Collect painting.

Edit: Also, I wonder if that broken screen is a mesh change or just a texture swap.

Maybe the symbol is only supposed to be seen before the screen breaks rather than overlay circuitry behind the broken screen.

@Reborninshadow
Thank so much for letting us see how the X-ray machine works. I wondered multiple times what Lara going to do and what the endresult is.

Input -> the painting
Output -> the symbol

So glad that we can discovering new things. Just to think we knew everything about the game... I'm looking forward to new information reveal from the developers in 30th july and in this thread.

Keep up the good work !

Yeah, I'm thinking that from the mentions in Murti's notes, Lara was most likely to scan the painting, the result would come up on the monitor (hence the zoom in), the "arcs of energy" or whatever from the symbol would destroy the monitor and push Lara back (She does this when picking it back up, and I suspect it's in reverse), and then she'd pick it up and leave.

If the broken screen was just a texture overlay, I wonder if it'd be possible to replace it.

Broken screen seems to be a mesh change and the machine part inside is 3d, not just a texture.

Yeah, it didn't look completely flat so I had a sinking feeling.

I wonder if the arcs of energy thing refers to the energy waves Eckhardt/Karel are shooting around at the end of the game? As in the same type of thing being used here supposedly.

Huh, that's interesting, I guess it could be because there's some kind of sorcery involved which is why the metallic symbol presumably got scorched onto the circuits. Hopefully the x-ray desk can be transparent on the pc version as well.

I'm pretty sure that one is just a texture issue, as reborn said in a previous post. It seems to be lacking transparency on PC whereas the PS2 version has it.
