Default House of the Dragon

Quote:
House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series that is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones (2011–2019), both based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R. R. Martin. The prequel series was created by Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO and is based on portions of Fire & Blood. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are showrunners for House of the Dragon. Set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession, known as the "Dance of the Dragons".

House of the Dragon received a straight-to-series order in October 2019 with casting beginning in July 2020 and principal photography starting in April 2021 in the United Kingdom. The series premiered on August 21, 2022, and its first season will consist of ten episodes.

i'll be honest and say I'm trying to resist this because of how disappointed I was in the conclusion of GOT.

But I feel like this is going to be heavier on the dragon part and the dinosaur lover in me wants to watch anything that even comes close.

I was also bitterly disappointed with how Game of Thrones ended. My advice, don't resist too hard.

After re-watching Season 8, I was a bit more accepting of the outcome, though another season was needed to develop the story-line of Daenerys going from a fan-favorite beloved female character to a cold-blooded maniac who had no reason at all to burn down a city that had easily surrendered to her. GOT should have hired new writers if the old ones were so desperate to hit the door.

Anyway, I didn't find the first episode of HOD all that special. All focused on a handful of Targaryens vying for the Iron Thrown. So far, it is not the sweeping epic story-telling of powerful factions that roped us in to GOT. And the dragons---well, they kinda look like subjugated skinny snakes with wings. Certainly not the majestic creatures we're used to loving and fearing. Soundtrack epicness was missing too, without even a good intro like GOT had.

Hopefully I didn't make any spoilers here.

Wasn't initially interested in this because of what happened to GoT, but a reviewer I watch on YouTube got early screeners and said the show doesn't really find it's footing until around Episode 3. So I'm giving it a go!

The first episode was actually pretty decent, so I'm cautiously optimistic about the episodes going forward.

I want it to be good but I'm not buying into to it yet. I'll see how the reviews are for it after at least half way through the season, or even the end of the season.

It was so good.

It's interesting to revisit initial reviews of Game of Thrones season 1 and comparing them with House of the Dragon. People had no idea back then of the magnitude that the GOT phenomenon would be. I haven't read House of the Dragons but I heard that the show does things that the book doesn't because of the perspective and the direction of the show. For example, the book is written by a maester while the show is under the perspective of the Targaryen family; this is why we get to see the prophecy as told by Vyserys. Apparently, it's not featured in the book as the maester wrote history from hearsay and accounts and don't have the details. It also suggests that the GOT ending is not canon with Martin's ending, or that the Jon Snow sequel might actually be the true ending that Martin envisioned (after all, he has an entire book planned after the Long Night and the Great War and Martin wanted 12 seasons of the show). Who knows how much D&D left out of the show?

I really believe this will be a major hit for HBO. It has the writing that I have been craving for since GOT S4. It's visceral, honest, raw, complex and you don't get to understand all the details if you don't pay attention to what's happening. GOT S5-8 was written in such an obvious way that it took all the mystery away.

I wish we could have skilled writers like that for Tomb Raider; WHAT AN AMAZING PIECE OF ENTERTAINMENT IT WOULD BE. I mean, I legit hope one day someone can get extract the essence of Tomb Raider in a similar fashion with intelligence, nuance, humour, complexity and just excellence.

I liked the Game of Thrones ending. I knew Daenerys was a nut job from the get go. People just didn't like it that their blonde, blue-eyed Aryan heroine was exposed as a psycho fascist. I didn't object to Bran Flakes being the winner, either - it had to be a Stark.

I liked the first episode of House of the Dragon because I liked the actors (Paddy Considine , Matt Smith and Emma D'Arcy) and because they didn't skimp on the violence. Hoping for more "sexposition".

No, that's not the issue. The issue was the rushed ending, the nosedive in good quality writing and character decisions and U turns on character development.

GOT spends over 6 seasons (60+episodes) building up Daenerys and other characters.... for them to be squished and concluded in about 6 episodes. There's a key difference here.

As for this series, I really have no interest in it. Maybe I'll watch it one day, but my GOT excitement died a long time ago. Series 8 left a bad taste in my mouth. Also I think "House of Dragon" sounds better imo without the "the".

This.
For now I will pass on this new series, maybe I'll watch it when it has concluded and the general review consensus is out. I'm sorry I just can't invest myself in a prequel that I already know has a story that ties up into an unsatisfying ending.
