Default Windows 10 Multipatch Killed my Game

Hi all,

I decided to install and play The Lost Artifact using Stella's guide to copy the disc files and run it directly from the hard drive as my brand new PC build does not have a CD drive built in.

All was going well and I'd checked to see if the game would run, even following the instructions to fix the crash at main menu detailed here;
https://www.tombraiderforums.com/sho...d.php?t=223210

I realised I'd missed the step for Installing the Windows 10 patch, and so I went back and ran it, however now the game won't stop crashing at the title menu again.

Now, I have uninstalled and deleted everything several times but I cannot fix this. I even uninstalled TR3 just in case, and no luck. I even installed the game on my old Win 10 PC, copied the setup and config etc. onto a USB as it was working vanilla, but even that didnt do the trick.

My theory is the Windows 10 patch has left something somewhere, so if I'm right how the heck do I scrub it from my PC and get back to where I was before?

If Im wrong then how do I fix this? 😂

Yes, it works on my old PC, but Im gutted that Ive broken it on my new one and am really regretting not following the 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' rule 😭

If anyone can fix this for me then I'll build you a temple or something!!!

Thanks!

The only thing I can think of is this: Delete config.txt, run the game, then the setup dialogue will show, then try different settings.

Yep, I tried that! No luck 😞

A little context which I neglected to say in the op; the reason why I think it may be something to do with the patch is it always opens in Setup now, which it didn't do before and according to the install guide is a feature of the patch...

I doubt that it was the multipatch that caused the issue, although it can't be ruled out completely. If I recall correctly, when patching The Lost Artefact via the multipatch, it does not touch the tr3gold EXE or config file, it only adds DLL files and places the existing DLL files in a backup folder. But I'm not 100% sure if that's all it does.

Start a fresh once again by following the info here. This thread may also be helpful. The config file is usually the culprit of most Lost Artefact crashes.

I agree. I had an experience with TR3 downloaded from gog.com. It kept crashing until I deleted config.txt and used the default one generated by the game. Then I compared the 2 config.txt. The crash is because it sets AGP to 1. But after search, I found it's OK on other's computer to set AGP to 1. So it's pretty random here, at least by my knowledge. I don't know if there's an absolutely safe default.

BTW: If chakram will to show his/her config.txt, it might be helpful.

Sorry for the late reply, work, time differences etc.

This is my config:
DD 0
D3D 1
D3DTF 1
DS 0
VM 9
ZBUFFER 1
DITHER 1
FILTER 1
AGP 0
SOUND 1
JOYSTICK 0
MMX 0
SFX 10
MUSIC 10
GAMMA 3.000000
DEFKEY 200 208 203 205 52 53 54 184 157 57 51 82 207 1
USERKEY 72 80 75 77 83 79 54 184 157 57 76 82 207 1

I also tried with MMX 1 as that works on the other PC. Ive yet to cycle through different VM numbers

EDIT: Started trying different VM numbers, didn't get better only worse

Default Update

So lightning struck and after uninstilling I ran the disc cleanup as admin hoping that it'd do a better job of scrubbing and its sort of worked...

The game no longer crashes, however no music plays on the menu, and going into Croft Manor no voice lines or music trigger. There are sound effects though.

At lower resolutions going into inventory I see the levels loading screen but in black and white, upping the resoloution has made it just blank black.

Current config:

DD 0
D3D 1
D3DTF 1
DS 0
VM 9
ZBUFFER 1
DITHER 1
FILTER 1
AGP 0
SOUND 1
JOYSTICK 0
MMX 0
SFX 10
MUSIC 10
GAMMA 3.000000
DEFKEY 200 208 203 205 52 53 54 184 157 57 51 82 207 1
USERKEY 72 80 75 77 83 79 54 184 157 57 76 82 207 1

I've also started seeing that line on the loading screens that I've seen talked about elsewhere, this wasn't on the other PC's install and I've not spotted a fix for this.

Thanks for your patience with me, I admit I don't know what I'm doing 😅

This is my config.txt
Code:
DD 0
D3D 1
D3DTF 1
DS 0
VM 18
ZBUFFER 1
DITHER 1
FILTER 1
AGP 0
SOUND 1
JOYSTICK 0
MMX 1
SFX 10
MUSIC 10
GAMMA 3.000000
DEFKEY 200 208 203 205 52 53 54 184 157 57 51 82 207 1
USERKEY 72 80 75 77 83 79 54 184 157 57 76 82 207 1
VM is the screen resolution, so it doesn't matter. I think we have the essentially same config.txt. So I guess it's more likely to be the problem of your system, probably the new Nvidia graphics card. My system is Win7 with Intel graphics card.

Having weird lines on the menu/loading screens usually means it's using old DirectX, at least that was my case; then I started using dgVooDoo and it's been perfect ever since, and it also fixed the jaggy fonts.
Not playing music when on the main menu, again, from personal experience, it meant I was missing some files. Can't remember which one though.
And I never used any multi-patch if that means anything to you.

This is how my game folder looks right now:

I installed from an ISO made from the game disc, so shouldn't be missing any tracks. I'm pretty sure it played before I made the mistake of installing the patch.

I've seen dgVooDoo talked about a lot, I'm wondering if that's the route I need to go down for this one, I'm just wary of messing around even more now, I think getting AoD running so nice easily gave me a false sense of confidence 😅
