The biggest sin was how much it needlessly cut out. If they hadn't been so scissor-happy on some levels I'd be singing the game's praises all day.

^ That is true.
Take Palace Midas for example. TR1's counter-intuitive design of the level encouraged you to study the layout of the map and where everything leads to. The level even starts off with 3-4 paths to explore, and you would have to make a mental note on where to return later. In comparison, TRA's take on Midas level's design was too intuitive. Just a bunch of short symmetric corridors with a puzzle room at the end that didn't encourage any kind of exploration. I think exploration is the core of TR and Anniversary truly failed at that to some degree. It was still fun, but it lacks that extra punch. |

Oh god yes .
I mean , I'm one of the people who hated the butchering of Palace Midas , because many memorable bits got needlessly cut (the aqueduct , the garden , the temple engraved into the cavern wall etc) AND the original design of the palace was quite intriguing , clever and well thought out . However , I firmly believe that many parts of TR1 needed trimming and getting the scissors treatment , one of TR1's glaring flaws is the abundance of useless rooms at times , that are only there to pad out and artificially prolong the level without any actual memorability or substance . Y'know , rooms that are just...there . I don't need to pull 48532 levers to finally get to the lever that opens the closed door in the original room (that's exaggeration but you got the idea) , it's repetitive and not fun . Tomb of Tihocan and half of Atlantis sprints to mind . TR1 also had those empty large boxy areas with disproportionate distances (that were obviously there to hide the poor loading and draw distances) , we didn't need those either in a remake . |

Off topic but what is the Palace Midas' Aqueduct? I played TR1 from beginning till the end but I don't know what is this aqueduct? I couldn't find any pictures of it either.

They're probably talking about the water, that was on the top of the palace.

Unfinished Business would have been great. But we didn't even get the full TR1, let alone the gold expansion. Shame on them indeed for butchering a classic.
