Default Speedrun or NLNMAS?

There's a question in the back of my mind lately about all classic TR games, not just TR1.

Which category of run do you think is more impressive to complete, Speedrun or NLNMAS?

I've always considered that the latter was a more impressive feat and pretty much the pinnacle of excellency, but I've got doubts now since it looks like the former is favored among top TR players considering this is where most of the advanced techniques come from.

Any thoughts?

I think it depends.

Both of them can be achieved with enough of practise and training. Although I think, Speedruns are the greater challenge, as there's always a goal to beat. Once you memorized the levels, NLNMAS runs probably aren't that hard anymore - they are actually more forgiving than speedruns, because you can still take your time to align jumps correctly in order to prevent sudden death.

In a speedrun, every (milli-)second counts - and although you can re-load once you screwed up, you probably will have to re-do the whole thing anyway, as the time you lost is nearly impossible to get back. Everything needs to be executed flawlessly and fast.

I'm not saying that NLNMAS runs are easy - I haven't completed a single one of those - because the NL part would drive me crazy - but in direct comparison, I feel speedruns are more challenging overall.

They are not Mutually Exclusive. I think that the hardest would be Speedrun NLNMAS. That is what I actually do and I have a lot of fun doing it, even if that gives you less time to think and safe strats are not an option, increasing the number of deaths and resets. It really pushes you to the limit in my opinion, it gives me thrills and fun.
I am really happy that they added the classics NLNMAS as a Speedrun category on the Speedrun site.

TL;DR: I would really say that the final challenge would be to try to do a NLNMAS as fast as possible, which I consider to be one of the best thing you can do in TR

With some practice, anybody can do a NLNMAS run.
Speedrunning is not a thing anyone can just decide to pick up because IMO you have to be naturally gifted at doing them (persistence, muscle memory).

NLNMAS can be done leisurely.

NLNMAS is the one that impresses me more because speedruns are becoming more boring in my opinion

I agree.
The combination of both disciplines sounds like the ultimate challenge.
