Genre(s): Action/Stealth
Developer: IO Interactive
Publisher: Eidos Interactive (2000 – 2009) / Square Enix (2009 – Present)
Platforms: Playstation 2, Nintendo Gamecube, Microsoft Windows, Xbox, Xbox 360
First Release: Hitman Codename 47 (November 2000)
Latest Release: Hitman Blood Money (May 2006)

Hitman is a stealth game series developed by the Danish company IO Interactive, now a division of Square Enix. The series is available on PC as well as several video game consoles, including the Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. The game series has since expanded into a novel, Hitman: Enemy Within written by William C. Dietz, and a Hitman film adaptation which is loosely based on the storyline of the games. Released on November 21, 2007, it starred Timothy Olyphant in the role of Agent 47.

The series revolves around Agent 47 (usually simply referred to as "47" or "Mr. 47"), an assassin-for-hire, whose flawless record places him in high demand among the wealthy and elite. The games feature a mix of orchestral and electronica musical scores, composed by Jesper Kyd. Hitman 5 is in the works; according to the Square Enix team and is due for release late in the fourth quarter of 2010.

To date, four games have been released with a fifth title in development by IO Interactive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows. The fifth title has been officially announced by Square Enix, though no further information has been released. The games contain violence and blood and are rated Mature (17+) by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. All games are third-person stealth-based, although it is possible to switch between third-person and first-person perspective in all versions except in the first, which offers an optional camera angle comparable to one used in fixed-camera adventure games.

The core objective in each level is to kill an assigned target (usually one and sometimes a secondary target as an optional bonus). In most cases, Hitman allows the player different options to accomplish this task. Players can perform precise assassinations or slaughter indiscriminately in order to achieve the mission goals; however, the games reward a subtle approach by awarding special weapons or cash bonuses if players earn a favourable rank (usually achievable by eliminating only the assigned target, and without raising the alarm doing so). 47 can also wear a variety of disguises (such as repairmen, police officers and waiters) to fool enemies and gain access to restricted areas. The focus of Hitman is not hiding in the shadows from the enemy, but rather blending in amongst them. It is up to the player to initiate the violence, since guards do not usually open fire unless provoked.

How odd, I was thinking of starting this thread the other day. I am a major fan of the series, and I enjoyed the movie, (while flawed) it was actually pretty good.

I can't wait for Hitman 5 & the second Hitman film!

Beaten to the punch, Nate . I absolutely love the Hitman series - it's definitely one of my favourites. I'm looking forward to more news about Hitman 5 - it's been four years since we've seen anything...I do hope they present it at E3 this year or I'll be sourly disappointed.

I don't really consider the film adaptation a Hitman movie, but an action movie with a similar character. It strayed far from what the franchise was about and was sculpted into a Hollywood blockbuster. Shame. Although I was excited when I saw scenes from the first episode of Dark Angel in the intro of the film - that made me jump up and down in the theatre.

Regarding Contracts, I haven't gotten past the first level .

I enjoyed the Hitman movie, but the plot was so unlike the games. and 47 was too sensitive.

As soon as Olga Kurylenko's character said something about her always wanting a Vineyard, or Cherry orchard or whatever, I said to myself, "I bet he's gonna buy her one"

Well here's some sort of news on both the next film and possibly Hitman 5!

Hitman 2 Locked and Loaded
Director reportedly hired, but will Olyphant return as Agent 47?

May 24, 2010
by Jim Vejvoda

20th Century Fox has reportedly hired Spanish filmmaker Daniel Benmayor to direct Hitman 2, but the question is whether there will be a new actor stepping into the shoes of Agent 47?

Deadline reports that Benmayor, a commercials director whose credits include Paintball and Bruc, will be making his stateside feature filmmaking debut with the sequel to the 2007 game-to-film adaptation.

Kyle Ward, who also scripted Kane & Lynch, penned the sequel's script. Variety reported last year that the sequel will be based on the Eidos game Hitman 5, which they said at the time was set for a late 2010 release. Deadline had the following blurb about the plot: "Agent 47, is a beaten man and must build himself back psychologically and physically to reclaim his mantle as world's most feared assassin."

Deadline also said that while the studio has an option on star Timothy Olyphant to return, it's not clear if he will reprise his role as Agent 47. As the site points out, Olyphant's career is hot right now thanks to his hit TV series Justified.
I hope Olyphant returns, I actually really liked him as Agent 47.

The Agent 47 thing was the only issue I had. The rest of the film was actually really good, and like I said while it was flawed I did think it was a really good film.

Why not? He's a good actor, the only issue with the first film was the script he was given. With a change of script he could be perfect.

i think it was the script too. he wasnt cold enough, i think also.

also, there were little things that didnt make sense; like why all of the clones looked differently? sure some of them varied in ages, but none of them looked like various ages of the same clone.

but i am waiting for the next film
