Personally I think it’s more annoying if people constantly change their avatars. I hardly ever look at people’s display names, especially if they’re very long with lots of letters and numbers. I think most people here are probably also more visual and so your avatar becomes more of a part of your identity - your face that’s tied to each post. People who keep changing their avatars don’t have the same impact.

What.

You paid to have a "Golden" title and username!

No, I donated to the forums, that’s not paying for a service. I didn’t choose the title below my name either, it originally said Silver Contributor, then Gold Contributor, now it’s been changed to Golden. I can opt out of it if I want to though.

Yeah I later posted that it’s in Admin CP, but it’s not available for users themselves so it’s not practical. I haven’t used it either for years since I ran a very small forum as a joke .

I don’t see what the issue would be though. It’s not like you would need to pay to use the forums itself, you would just pay to change the aesthetic of your profile. It is just that, an optional service, nothing essential is being gated behind an unfair paywall.

That got me thinking… isn’t changing a display name to be silver/golden AND bold also a display name change? Doesn’t that work the exact same way that removing a number would?

Actually this is easier to do than changing a nickname. It doesn't cause any issues with old posts. Iirc it's just a change in user rank settings so it's not even related to particular users, but groups.

I meant the display name being recoloured and boldened, not the user rank. Surely that means it’s receiving a “[ B][ COLOR="Golden"][/COLOR][/B]” added to it, or something similar.

That's the same thing, user rank can modify user's nickname text formatting. Now I remember vBulletin has both ranks (post related etc) and I think groups/roles (permissions related) but from what I remember both can actually change your name color etc. I used that on my forums to give administrators red nickname color and to give special ranks to people who won some competitions.

That being said I remember having issues determining which formatting is more important - that of a role or that of a rank.

Yes, but how many Tommys are there? None other that I can think of. Mine is creative? Or at least unique. If a drunk, epileptic, tap-dancing cat bumbling across a keyboard during an earthquake resulting in a mess of a username can be considered unique.

Yours is easily one of the most uncreative ones
