Legend Fixes

Hey everyone!

I've decided to create a thread dedicated to making improvements to Lara's models in gameplay, cutscenes and the main menu. The aim is to remove grey artifacts from all playable models, this process involve editing textures and moving parts of Lara, for example gloves, a few pixels as a time until the grey artifacts are eliminated, but occasionally paint tools are necessary.

Before | After

As proof of concept, here are the changes made to Lara's Legend model. Note the grey next to the inner corner of the eyes, this have been corrected using paint tools. See image 1.

The grey artifacts behind the ears and jaw have been removed, this was done by moving parts of a texture. See image 2.

The belly texture was moved slightly away from the centre where it's mirrored, and the result is a more refined belly button. See image 3.

Grey lines on the thumbs and between the legs have been removed, this was done by moving parts of a texture as well. See image 4.

Lara's hair is one of few textures I've found so far to lack mipmaps, this is no longer the case. See image 5.

The back of Lara's Yeti journal have been flipped horizontally so her name is now displayed correctly. See image 6.

Legend Fixes:
  • All playable models have been inspected and many artifacts are removed.
  • A number of other errors have been fixed such as the stretched Mission Prep screen.
  • This mod also have all of MachoBroccoli's fixes. This is related to King Arthur's face, Yakuza goons, James Rutland's bio, and Nishimura's glasses. (Thread) See images 7-10.

TexMod

tpf file: Download

[Version 1.0, last updated 19th December 2021]

Mods that can be used concurrently with Legend Fixes tpf file:
  • Alternate Outfits.tpf contain PSP exclusive outfits (thanks to TheTreeble for sharing the ripped textures) and unused pc outfits. (Download here)
  • Red Dress.tpf swaps Lara's Evening and Ripped outfits with red versions. (Post)
(For this to work; either Alternate Outfits.tpf or Red Dress.tpf must be above Legend Fixes in the TexMod list.)

Advice for best gameplay experience:
  • Enable VSync in external settings.
  • Disable Next generation content in Display settings.
  • Disable Fullscreen Anti-Aliasing in Display settings, enable AA in the GPU control panel instead, this will fix Lara's broken shadow.
  • Bolivia skybox issue fix, read about it here.

Update #1:

This is strictly a TexMod project because there is too much work involved to edit DRM files. Legend and Winter outfits are done and ready to go. If you see any flaws in either of these outfit catagories then please let me know.

Legend outfits changes are shown in the first post.

Winter outfits changes:
  • Removed grey from Lara's facial features, thumbs and fingers
  • Removed grey stripe down the middle of her belly. Orange/Pink No Coat outfits is fixed in all instances. Blue No Coat outfit is fixed in Kazakhstan main menu, storymode gameplay and cutscenes only. The Blue No Coat model is missing its belly button in the manor or when replaying levels. It's just skin and no gap - blame bad UV mapping.

Update #3:

All Evening and Biker models are done. There wasn't much artifacts to remove from both of these sets, so hats off to CD quality control team of 2006 for doing their job.

This project have hit the milestone of fixing-up all models which are used during storymode. Download link have been updated with tpf file Version 0.12.

This is incredible and you're doing a really great job spotting all of the gray areas.

It was one of those things that's always bugged me about the old gen models, I believe next gen Lara doesn't suffer from this since all the gray areas are filled out as far as NG textures are concerned.

Thank you

It got a little easier after I've finished editing the Legend model and learnt where to check for uv mapping mistakes on other models. It's a bit of a learning curve.

Update #4:

Four further models are finished which falls into the Catsuit and Suit catagories. Artifacts have been removed from facial features, arms, fingers, thumbs and gloves. Take a look at what is probably the worst offender of poor uv mapping:
