I love indie movies, I can recommend you dozens.
Lets start with 3 titles.

A Ghost Story (2017) by David Lowery
Don't expect visual effects, but visual poetry.

Then, two films by Mike Cahill: Another Earth (2011) and I Origins (2014)
Two great examples on how to make a science-fiction movie without visual effects.

The Spectacular Now starring Shailene Woodley, I can't say anything about it because of spoilers but it's a really good movie and one I would definitely recommend.

Nikita (1990) : It should get more recognition than Leon imo.
The eyes of my mother (2016) : Psychological horror and madness at their best!

The Loved Ones, it is an Australian dark satire horror film and twistedly hilarious with great performances. My best advice is to go into the movie blind, don't read about it and don't watch the trailers, just experience it.

Dead End (2004) - it's a black comedy horror.

Agreed. Nikita is more plausible than Mathilda, but writing realistic female characters has never been Luc Besson's strong suit.

Anyway, my recommendation is Felidae. Why wasn't this movie released in the U.S. and the U.K.?

That's good advice for every movie released these days, way too much is given away by trailers these days for example Terminator Genisys which is why I no longer watch movie trailers.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death is a pretty cute 1970s horror movie that includes an old house, graves, paranormal activity and all kinds of cool halloween stuff. It's also a low budget movie so it's more story driven rather than focused on cliché special effects.

I don‘t know if that‘s an unheard of one but I always recommend Magic, Magic with Juno Temple in the leading role. Such a great weird and also spooky movie. Not in the sense of horror but it just captures that feeling of being alone in a group of strangers and feeling uncomfortable really nicely. It also deals with the topic of psychosis in a quite interesting way, which is always something I like in movies.

For those of you who are interested, please don‘t watch the trailer. It does the movie no justice and makes it look like a random horror flick. So if you want to watch it, just jump in blindly.
