Default TR1 FMV's - 20th Anniversary HD Remaster

Hey everyone!

You might remember me being name-dropped in Digital Foundry’s Tomb Raider Retrospective. To refresh your memory, I was highlighted for doing some remasters of the original CGI FMV from the original Tomb Raider in 1996.

Now, for the record, I am not a Coder, I am not a modder. I just love working with video and graphics, and the original FMV from Tomb Raider (Which was stunning for 1996 BTW) was always something that captivated me. Especially the “VISION” scene, where Lara gets a vision to continue her search in Egypt. That scene has so many different elements to it; CGI, Photo, Lighting, Hand-Drawn stills and motion blur.

Playing it a few years ago on PC, I was dismayed that the footage was so aged and no care had been put into its preservation. So, using my media skills, I took matters into my own hands.

Now, I tried everything to get a good upscale result. I tried Premier, AfterEffects, Final Cut, Photoshop. I tried everything! Then a few months ago, I stumbled across a process which made everything come out very good. Maybe not 100% perfect, but a lot more legible and presentable than had been shown previously.

Now, for the record, this process does take time and it can often take 1-2 days to remaster a single video as a lot of machine time is required to render.

It is not perfect and there are several scenes I have seen with some obvious flaws. But given it is coming from a 240p source, it is better than nothing.

Lara is now 20 years old, and she brought me here, keeping her Legacy alive 20 years on.

So, consider this a gift to everyone in the community and to developers!

I would like to present to you, every single cut-scene from the game remastered to 4K and down-sampled to 1080p. You can watch them on YouTube and I have provided a Google Drive link for you to download in full uncompressed quality for you all to mess around with.

Fans, Modders and Developers are free to use them in whatever project they choose!

Of course, I would appreciate some credit where due! These did take a few months to finish in my spare time. And, if possible, please spread the word around! I would love to hear from more people who are interested in my work.

If you have any questions, please reply bellow or PM me! I am always looking to hear from people who have questions and contribute to any projects going.

Merry Xmas everyone, have a great holiday!

P.S. – I wonder what’s 20 years old next year?

Very well done.

I always liked the FMVs. They are so horribly animated

They are horribly animated, but still... I can see there a better Natla than Anniversary's Natla. More badass and evil. Don't mind me, I just love Classic TR villains.

Only saw this thread just now. Really incredible work! There's been a few remasters done on the old TR1 FMVs now, but I think these might be my favorite. I like that all the edges have remained nice and sharp, although the details have that "hand painted" sort of look that comes from upscaling. All in all, excellent work, and thank you very much for sharing.
