Again, the "crossdressing freak" line was written into the English localization, because it was the early 00s, and, well, Psycho and Silence of the Lambs had a certain effect on the collective conscious, despite the creators of both of those movies actually making an effort to not demonize trans people.

People ended up taking these movies as the go-ahead to do that anyway, because of latent phobias - and that's the way it's going to be with Alfred too, no matter what they do.

Nerds are going to get mad because the scary ****** isn't derided as such anymore, because that was the entire character to them (which makes you wonder what they valued the character for in the first place, if not as an outlet for bigotry), and the puritanical TikTok teens are going to get mad that Alfred's depiction is problematic by default.

You know, because queer-coded villains are a tired ****ing trope, but we've been over this.

Does anyone know if Capcom plans to release Resident Evil 4 remake on PC?

Localization? Pretty sure the games were made in english first, actually. Regardless, I think even without that line they'd be afraid of the reaction.

As you say, even though silence of the lambs pointed out the villain wasn't actually trans, it still inspired people to act transphobic.

The scripts are generally written in Japanese then translated into English for dubbing, the Japanese subtitles for that line say "あなたの仕業ね!", which translates to something like "This is your doing!" So if we trust the Japanese subtitles reflect the original Japanese script then we can probably say the line was altered by whoever did the localisation.

The first game had the translation handled directly by the director, and I think the second game as well. I'm not sure about the ones after that, though. They weren't 'dubbed' though because the voice acting (and animations for them) was done in English first until, I think, the 5th game, or even later.

I don't know why this line keeps becoming a discussion when it comes to a Code Veronica remake discussion. Neither of the remakes for 2 and 3 did a line for line dialog; so why is everyone even talking about it for Code Veronica? Obviously it will be changed and not necessarily because of currents times but because these remakes aren't 1:1 remakes.

Alfred, sadly, is the main glaring red flag and focal point that gets addressed, which always comes up when discussing a CV remake. Well...that and there hardly being an overwhelming demand apart from the small group of fans who like this game and want a remake. The needless backtracking and lack of knowing what to do for much of the game is the main concern in regards to the design of the game, but of course, a silly thing like Alfred tends to take the spotlight.

We are always just discussing how to modify his portrayal to make it less ridiculous and less laughable, and more multifaceted. We know why he's the way he is, but it could use more polish. Claire isn't exactly wrong when she call him that. He technically is a freak who crossdresses, but it shouldn't be a punch line. He still is set up as one even without that line. He'd be a mentally unstable weirdo even if he never dressed as a woman.

No one's ever suggested that a remake needs to have every single line of dialogue the same. Maybe have certain (good) iconic lines kept in, but not the iconic yet socially backwards ones like insulting him for wearing a dress and makeup. It's just so painfully 90s. Times have changed. It could be more contemporary to tell him his wig looks like barf and his dress looks like it's straight from a Party City bargain bin

And people have been talking about a CV remake even before REmake 2 was more than just a fantasy. Alfred is not a new talking point.

Regardless, the continuous banter about that one line when it comes to a remake is beyond inane because it's obviously not going to be in it.

A gritty and serious RE4 remake has to keep the cheese
