So after 23 years of my life of not having played Tomb Raider 4 because I was scared of its difficulty, I gave it a try.
I love some of the ideas the devs had, but honestly, the execution is at times really lack luster when it comes to graphics, explaining stuff to the player, etc. But biggest of all I had multiple game breaking bugs at this point And I have someone watching me the entire time whilst I play, so I do not imagine this! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For example, the lever in the mosque area idk what the level is called, with which you trap the egyptian monster thing inside so you can climb up the ladder without him hitting the ground and punching you down... I climbed up to that section without having triggered the monster before, so I just randomly pulled the lever and I was shown the cutscene of the doors closing. I was like oh okay, left the area, went to the Trenches and did the rest of my stuff. When I came back to the level and triggered the monster, guess what lever had not reset and no amount of waiting would have reset it? Yep, soft locked. So, I looked through walkthroughs, one of those walkthroughs literally said you should SKIP the whole mosque part and climb up the ladder all the way on the side so his ground smashes can't knock you down, like wtf, even a walkthrough tries to get you to avoid this buggy piece of **** of a level?? (Also it didn't work for me, maybe because of what I am about to mention but idk) I am using the tomb4 project patch from Troye for all of this btw, and anytime I encountered a serious bug I switched to the normal Steam exe, fixing absolutely nothing. The person watching me play this btw, never had ANY problem playing TR4. I had several occasions now where I HAD to load a save game from Stella, because progression was impossible! Right now for example, I collected all the keys in the "Underneath the Sphinx" level (which is grotesque btw, who the hell thought this was a fun game design) and when the final door opened I was presented a monkey swing WHICH I COULD NOT CLIMB ACROSS BECAUSE SHE ACTS AS THO I STOPPED PRESSING CTRL THAT BITCH At this point I even downloaded sketchy exes from the web, did not fix anything. SO just for anyone reading this, I AM REALLY TRYING TO LIKE THIS GAME, I can recognise it's potential but honestly with the TERRIBLE time I am having trying to play it, it feels buggier and more unfinished than AOD, but people praise TR4 and **** on AOD- I am baffled All of that said, I like the game but wtf Last edited by FreakRaider; 08-09-23 at 19:38. |

No idea what's going on your end, if you want help you'd have to say what OS you're on, etc.
I had no issues with bugs (Windows 7 64 bit, GOG version so not modded). To me The Last Revelation is clearly the best in the original Tomb Raider series, and the latter featured notable bugs only in Chronicles. |

You are best to make multiple saves, and then if there is a bug you can go back to an earlier save.

This is the most perplexing feedback I've ever read about Tomb Raider IV. Have experienced none of the things you mentioned, tomb4project too.

It's always game breaking if you keep very few saves. For example, if you save in the middle of a very long drop.

Every few years I replay the classics and TR4 is the one that I enjoy the least playing. Honestly considering when I do my next playthrough I'll just skip TR4 and go straight into TR5 and AOD.
Not because of bugs, I don't really remember having any at the top of my head. I just dislike the game. Feels like a massive chore to go through to me personally. |

The very first time I played, back in 2007 (omg 16 years ago 😭 ) it was really buggy. The loading took forever and Lara was turning non stop without any of my imput. Now I didn't have any real issues.
Well... except that Tulun area you mentioned, it doesn't work well indeed. Never been stuck because I always managed to climb that ladder, despite it being annoying because of that big creature. Never had an issue about the monkey swing though, weird ! I still love TR4... but Underneath the Sphinx definitely sucks. Worst level of the game !

An interesting phenomenon I have noticed is that people are either DIE HARD fans of TR4, or they do not talk about it at all!

I also feel like it is a rarity someone expresses a negative opinion about this game, I only ever hear everyone praising it. (and maybe adding that Cairo and onwards are meh, but gurl GAME BREAKING BUGS and sometimes terrible level design... come on now) |
