Throwing this here at Tomb Raidering's request:

Probably just overthinking all of this for a 1998 game
Anyone got ideas on the why behind this? Confuses the hell out of me.

A complaint about a plot hole:

I believe they're only present in TR2, 3, Legend and Anniversary

What do you expect from a game that was meant to be a DLC to TRII? According to rumors, the devs randomly selected locations from a globe and quickly made up a story to tie the locations together without giving too much thought into it.

EDIT: You and me at the same time...

Maybe the workers in the Antarctica level didn't the full extent of what Willard was up to until the mutants started appearing. Perhaps they thought if they took the artefacts from Lara they could put a stop it?

When I think about it, it is not easy to understand. Probably Core didn't pay much attention to make the gameplay consistent with the story in this case. Or they didn't make their intention clear (like in the case of monkeys attacking in Temple Ruins).

Maybe the workers didn't know Lara in Antarctica, because Willard didn't reveal to them that he wants to use the power of the meteorite. They treated her as an intruder. In RX-Tech Mines the workers may have wanted to stop Willard so they didn't obey him and they cooperated with Lara. In Meteorite Cavern Lara had the artefacts so she was an enemy - she hadn't destroyed the stones and maybe the workers were scared.

The kayak is the worst vehicle in the history of all video game vehicles.

I dont know where I read this, but it was stated that Eidos colluded with walk through magazines which is why Tomb Raider 3 turned out intentionally difficult to sell them These magazines were huge at the time before internet was widespread.

Sounds kind of far fetched but who knows.

Nearing the end of my TRIII playthrough (I've just reached the mines). This may be the first time I've played the game without consulting a walkthrough. I finally feel like an adult.

Congratulations! I remember the first time I managed to do it that way. The rewarding feeling is priceless.
