Default PC turns just by plugging in wall socket

Hi
My sister has a HP desktop pc, Windows 10, approx. 5 years old, which has suddenly started turning on just when she plugs it in the electric wall socket, i.e. you don't need to use the switch on the pc itself. Any idea why this might be?

Just after the above problem started, she found she couldn't sign in straight away, it says: "This sign-in option is disabled because of failed sign-in attempts or repeated shutdowns". After leaving the PC for a couple of hours, she is then able to sign in.

Whether the two problems are related I don't know but they did start more or less at the same time. I did some online searching and some people suggested changing the battery - we did that but it didn't resolve the issues.

Any help would be much appreciated!

You changed battery to a Desktop PC? I always thought only Laptops have batteries...
From the way you describe the problem, it seems like your sister turns off the PC simply by unplugging it.
Maybe the problem could be easily solved by shutting it down correctly.
I can't say more. If this doesn't help I'm afaid you have to bring it to a local expert for a checkup.

I only heard that if you hibernate instead of shuting down the PC, it's possible that a small electric change will wake up the PC.

Thanks for replies. Yes desktops have one of those round flat batteries, like a coin. But no she shuts the computer down properly, Power / Shut down, she would never just unplug it.

That's CMOS battery you're talking about of course

but after changing that have you reset your BIOS to its defaults to begin with?

Ah now that might be the thing. I did go into the BIOS but couldn't find where that option to reset is and didn't like to muck about too much with it. Searching the internet wasn't much help as it says different manufacturers have different settings. A quick look on the HP website didn't reveal anything either - but I'll have another search if you think that is the problem - thanks gidierre.

you're welcome
I can't be sure it's a BIOS settings related thing
pc's age might well weigh in

but no doubt you ought to be able to find among all those BIOS setup pages a general troubleshooting
SAVE DEFAULTS & EXIT
command

somehow as shown in the screenshot you see here:
https://keys.direct/blogs/blog/how-t...s-10-from-bios
hit F9 then F10

also, I'd be taking a look at something along the lines of power management and stuff, obviously still speaking about the very BIOS paraphernalia as opposed to power adjustments in Windows...

What I do not like about win10, is that there is no way to remove the password start. On win7 you could put into the password options 'no password'. So no password needed.

Also no way to shut off windows 10 updates, on win7 you could stop updates. I found updates took ages to load and there was never any improvements.

I wish on win10 you could remove passwords and also updates.
I just feel win10 was a backward step, compared to better user control of win7.

what do you mean?
go run netplwiz / User Accounts applet / uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password etc." and that's it afaict

just what would this have to do with Isis' issue anyway ?

If you search, there're several ways to remove the Windows update virus.
