Let's hope that there's no need for any spankings in the future.

Indeed. Let's hope not. Back to subject of TR1.

What I like :

-The creation of the best genre and franchise of all time.
- Perfect balance between exploration, platforming, combat and puzzles
- The atmosphere, unprecedented.
- Nice story
- Good music
- Great level design
- Great gameplay
- Good enemies variety
- The surprising deaths, especially Lara's turning into gold. Memorable.
- Lack of human enemies (yes I edited my post to add this after reading Rai's review )

What I dislike :

- Greece starts to really drags in Tomb of Tihocan.
- A lack of coherence in Greece but it doesn't matter that much for me.
- I'm not very much a fan of Atlantis / Great Pyramid. I mean I like some sections and the gross look but I'm tired of it quickly.
- The end cutscene, meh
- Sometimes relates too much on keys and levers

How dare you speak negatively of Greece!

It's ironic that Colosseum and Tomb Of Tihocan are two of my least favourite levels from TR1 and yet Greece is my favourite section. I think that Palace Midas and St Francis Folly are what wins it for me.

I love Greece by the way, especially Midas and Folly. Soooooo great. I like Colosseum and Cistern too.

TR1 is easily in my top 3 in the series, I'd probably just rank it after TRII. When I first played it back in the 90's, I felt like it captured a feeling that no other game then had managed to capture. Even to this day I feel like nothing has come close to capturing the way TR1 feels. It's such a special game to me and I still play through it at least once a year.

Likes:

Great levels/level design (Peru and Greece are both excellent)
Lara is fantastic
Immersive, even today
Enemies (especially the raptors/T-Rex)
Beautiful score

Dislikes:

Sudden difficulty spike towards the end
Save system (though I don't feel it's terrible, just wish it were autosave)
Loses some momentum in Atlantis

Honestly, there's a lot more to like than dislike in TR1.

Like:

The atmosphere
The story is fairly basic, yet it's also quite mysterious and interesting
Pretty much all of Peru, Greece and Egypt - but special mentions to Midas Palace and St Francis Folly
The lack of human enemies, besides those...5?
The surprising enemies like the T-Rex
Shelley Blond's VA work is pretty good, despite being slightly monotonous (which I think was down to direction) and there not being much of it.
There's probably more, but I'm trying to keep the post relatively short.

Honestly, for the first in the series, Core Design struck gold with TR.

Dislikes:

I never did take to the goons Natla hired. They don't seem very competent and rather an odd choice . Pierre and Larson are interesting enough, but the others, especially the skateboard kid and the cowboy seem almost pointless.
The skateboard area seems pointless in its own right
The Cistern and Tomb of Tihocan
There are some interesting ideas in Atlantis, but mostly it became tedious.
Pierre's teleporting skills. These can e funny in their own way, but ultimately annoying.

Yeah Pierre's disappearing and re-appearing is irritating, but due to technological limitations they couldn't do much else with the character sprites.

The cowboy in Natla's Mines is my favourite enemy in TR1.
