Not TR2 specific but I've noticed in a lot of the classic games there are areas that look like they could be accessible but aren't, like on your screenshot of Venice from above on the previous page there's a flat roof section which could be made accessible, maybe with a trapdoor into a hidden room or a passageway that offers a route other than the linear one.
