I'm playing through the whole series for the second time and I'm currently up to III. For me it's the most uneven game, difficulty and level design-wise in the Core series. I love Nevada and South Pacific, India and Antarctica are pretty good, but I absolutely loathe the London levels, to the point where I was about to just stop playing and go straight to The Last Revelation.
Even parts of levels are inconsistent; replaying Lud's Gate, I was like "Why do people hate this level? It's actually quite good. Feels like Tomb Raider I exploring the museum, reminds me of St Francis' Folly a bit." And then I got to the UPV section. Just horrific. Strict as hell timing, awful collision and control of the UPV and having to constantly return to the entrance (or use that glitch where Lara's head is technically above water so she can regain air in the upper tunnels). That being said, the game is gorgeous. The coloured lighting is absolutely amazing and texture work as well. It's the first thing I notice when transitioning from TRII to III. The levels feel less like levels and more like real places that Lara is exploring, with their open and non-linear design. The male character models aren't great but leagues ahead of those wrinkly abominations in TRII. The soundtrack too, my goodness. I didn't think I'd like any main theme in the series more than the first but I think TRIII just edges it out. "The Puzzle Element", "No Waiting Around", "Something Spooky Is In That Jungle", and "She's Cool" are some awesome tracks. I love the new mechanics too. Crouching and sprinting feel so natural, it's hard to go back to the previous games. I like the poison mechanic, new weapons and enemy design much more than TRII as well. I think Tomb Raider II is slightly more consistent than III, but a lot of the levels in that game are "meh" to me. Other than absolutely despising Thames Wharf and the latter half of Lud's Gate, at least it's not a whole ship section like Tomb Raider II. The Lost Artefact is also a much better expansion than The Golden Mask in my opinion. Much nicer looking and unique levels. Perfect for an expansion. |

![]() My introduction to the series was the 1998 PlayStation demo for Tomb Raider III, so I have huge nostalgia for the Nevada levels. Being a classic Doom fan also helps with the Lost Souls on the jackets of some enemies ![]() |

I love Thames Wharf - one of the most atmospheric 'modern' levels in all the old TR games. It is a thinly disguised 3D platforming heavy type of level, at least in the opening areas, but I suppose if you do not like that sort of gameplay you might find it frustratingly tricky.
Aldwych, particularly finding the secrets, annoyed me first and second times through, that element still does TBH. The Mason's temple door maze, in fact that whole area drags so I suppose I do agree the pacing in that level is not the most consistent. Lud's Gate, apart from the stupid diver's room glitch, I generally enjoy whether going the long or short routes. That time element in the underwater sections - finding the breathing space, getting back to it is entertaining gameplay for me. The uncertain shooting when using the UPV is an annoyance but you can learn how to use it fairly quickly so its not big issue. |
