Default Early script for Tomb Raider 1

I was searching online and came across this website not sure if any of this was posted before but it contains a few concepts and an early version of the screenplay of the first game that I'd never seen before SO I thoughts be nice to share.

If you scroll down to the Game design script section you can access it.

I've seen this before, and there are two things about it that always fascinate me:

1) It confirms that Natla's Office Tower is in Seattle.

2) It shows that the Greek levels were originally set in Cambodia... the tomb of Tihocan being in Angkor Wat. I mean... WOW. And yet, from their design notes it looks like they still wanted to have Greek elements (centaurs, Coliseum, Odyssey/Iliad) but in a jungle setting. Strange but interesting.

Thanks for posting this!

Thanks for posting!

Is this legit, though? It contains a few inconsistencies, like Lara being called 'Lara Cruz' in the first document, and her being called 'Lara Croft' in the second ine, despite them being from the same date?

In any case, it's an interesting read

Some of the documents mention Greece and Rome, I wonder if they merged these two together? In other docments there is mention of Cambodia.

It's funny how some of these locations and ideas were re-used in later games.

Thanks for sharing, I didn't know about these.

I believe it was never officially stated until CD's TR: Anniversary that the Greco-Roman levels of TR1 are in Greece. Before that, it was always ambiguous. Furthermore, the map of Lara's travels that was included with the Limited Edition trilogy of TRs 1-3 places the Greco-Roman location in Rome.

Interesting that it seems what became Palace Midas (Garden, Library, Baths) was placed before St Francis Folly (Stairs) and Colosseum in this version.

Makes you wonder how much the order of large room set pieces were shuffled around during development.

Thanks for posting @Tonyrobinson! I have seen most of these but some of them I rarely took time to really look at them.

What is this "outer well" and "inner well" thingy? It looks like it could be from either Atlantis or Greece?

I always enjoyed the fact that Lara was originally sketched as Laura Cruz. I imagine if Tomb Raider was released today (for the first time) we really might have Lara/Laura as a PoC character.

Also interesting to see early drawings with a bow!

Thanks for the interesting read. Anyone recognize any of the voice actors?

Its a pity some rooms were never made from the early script, take for example the alien tree room which is shown in the concept art, which is in your link.

Though I did notice in The Great Chi archives, he made his own short video version of the alien Tree room, which would have been pretty good if it had been in the original TR1 game

Isn't that concept art from Unfinished Business?
