AoD can't be the magnum opus. It didn't even manage to achieve all it set out to do. It feels unfinished and incomplete (because it is). Also I think it couldn't have been the magnus opus. It's too different from usual TR.

If they kept the stealth as it is in TR3/5 and if they kept the original TR combat camera, and if the game was still tank-oriented... AND was complete, I think AOD would be up there with TR1 & TR2 in consideration of the more general TR fans (before having our taste diluted by Legend onwards).

And if it had a sufficient amount of tomb-like levels.

The most recognized body of work? Tomb Raider: Legend, alongside Lara Croft Tomb Raider and, to a lesser extent, Lara Croft Tomb Raider.

Any memes about Legend are the ones that go viral, the Legend outfit is synonymous with Lara Croft at this point. The only outfits surpassing it are the TR 2013 Survivor outfit and the Teal Leotard from the classics. People remember the music, the plots, the sword, how bombastic it is.

As for the Jolie films, those looks are iconic and it's what people most fondly remember of TR. People the world over were gutted and confused at Lara Croft being "recast" even though Angelina would've been a total miscast for the Lara in TR 2018.

That's my answer. My personal favorites (Shadow, Anniversary, The Last Revelation) aren't exactly the "breakout hit" status required of a Magnum Opus.

Unpopular opinion but none. I *still* think the best TR is yet to come. TR1-5 were my favourite era but none of them quite managed to combine each thing which made every individual title amazing. Possibly, I think TRAE could have been that magnum opus. Who knows.

Oh sweet summer child, what optimism

I see your point. Has there been a perfect Tomb Raider game we can't make a major criticism of? Like, at all?

Because one cannot simply be PERFECT.
Even the "PERFECT" ones have their lows.

Yeaux, that's not the point of the thread, though. It's "What is the most recognizable Tomb Raider?" When did the TR formula get so refined to the point where it's still recognized in the public to this day?
