Just finished the game. It was quite fun, and it was nice to return to the world of monkey island after all this time.
Fameplay-wise it was straight forward, and the minimiues user interface fit very well into todays faming environment.

I found the puzzles a bit too easy (in the sense that I only got suck once), and some of the puzzles were quite obvious in what the solution is, but not in how to get the game to do it, which can get a tad annoying at times. All in all it was a great throwback to happier times, though.

I'll put the rest in spoiler tags, since, obviously, I'm gonna talk about the ending.

While still witty and funny, you can clearly tell, that Ron Gilbert has become more mature in his way of thinking. The subtext of the game is actually a bit dark and the game even reiterates this to you close to the ending.
The letter from Ron you find in the scrapbook post game explains a lot of his thought process, I think.

While the actual ending is rather anticlimactic, I feel there's a lot room given to interpret things. All the choices you can make in that final scene lets you shape the ending in the most satisfying way for you, which is nice.

I recommend playing 1-3 first, actually. Return references a lot of things from the previous games.

The officiall recommendation from Ron Gilbert is:
"Play MI1 and 2 first - and 3, if you have the time".

You have to play the first 3, note: they can be lengthy games.
