The between-adventure jobs Lara was forced to accept...

It's the latter, obviously.

I don't think widescreen in terms of television and video games even crossed anyone's mind at that time.

I was checking some magazine scans of a magazine called Secret Service and this is what i found(i believe its the Tomb raider 1 stand on the ECTS autumn 1996)

Do you know which issue this is?

That's correct. 2 pages after the trade show info is a preview story on Tomb Raider. Pretty funny reading it today, with all the inaccurate info ("a powerful syndicate hires one of the best out of the best assassins for something in the lines of 'Mission: Impossible' - it's about finding an artifact named Scion. Nobody knows where it is and what powers it possesses, only legends make mentions of its existence").
