But as I said in my previous post, they need to find a better balance.
Maybe if they didn't give 2013 an massive budget, they wouldn't need to mass market it to the point where its unrecognisable on anything more than what the main character looks like.

We're at the point where 90's FPS games like Shadow Warrior and Blood play alot more like TR, with switch/key hunting, maze-like levels, actual traps, supernatural enemies with unique abilities like flying, turning invincible temporarily or requiring certain weapons to kill without wasting a lot of bullets, platforming that isn't automated, an inventory system with item/ammo management and searching for hidden areas with ammo/weapons.

Its not that these games are super close to TR, its that new TR is pretty much almost entirely different.

Wouldn't it be better to have a big budget so that the game's overall quality is among the best out there and at the same time have more classic mechanics merged with new and exiting content so that both sides can be pleased?

The notion that having less budget would be beneficial for the franchise's success is questionable. Not only casuals wouldn't pay for a game that is completely like the classics (hence why I keep saying there needs to be a balance between old and new), but on top of that, the game wouldn't have the same quality as Rise, for example, and that's something gamers demand in these type of games.

As I said, something as simple as adding more classic traits to the character would do wonders. In fact, most of the complaints I see are about Lara's iconography. Not so much about the actual content of the games, at least in Shadow's case. A better story and some more combat to keep audiences engaged would've helped a lot too. Those 3 things would help improve the franchise in a significant way imo.

To be blunt, yes the series needs a budget.

But not a massively inflated one that they have to make up for by removing everything that made the series unique for mass appeal.

To be blunt, you could make Jonell Elliot in 2013, Change her appearance and her dialogue and yes, I would have enjoyed the game more, specificly, only Lara.

I'd still hate the poorly developed side-characters, I'd still hate how linear it is, I'd still hate Lara's Plot Armor and how dumb Matthias is and I'd still hate the really simple combat system that is what 90 percent of the game is.

Alot more changed in the games than what Lara looks and sounds like.

Not for me. Reboot/Rise/Shadow tried that but didn't execute the more classic mechanics well enough. It took 3 games to get decent underwater swimming for gods sake. TR1/Legend had that from the start.

I'd rather them have a smaller budget with a smaller team working on a true Tomb Raider game that focuses on the original design but also allows for casual gamers to play too.

Just because it has a smaller budget doesn't mean the quality would suffer.

You don't know that. Crash and Spryo has done it.

I agree!

Se/CD are big companies. They donít make small games to cater to a few bunch of people. Again, thatís not how business works

I'm not specifically talking about SE/CD. That's why I've said about TR being given to someone else.

And yes I work in the games industry, on games that have a specific audience and that doesn't put "casual gamers" first. I know how the business works.

I find it quite insulting that Black Widow dual wields pistols and has the acrobats Lara used to have. I feel like reboot Lara should have evolved more into that with each game but instead we still have her scrambling, falling around everywhere (slightly less in Shadow admittedly)...

Yes indeed. After having just seen the Black Widow gameplay it feels like another punch in the crotch.

Iím also rubbed the wrong way by the Black Widow gameplay. It looks so cool and fluid, and effortless. The hesitance to include familiar iconography like this is so unnecessary.

If you know how business works, and you know TR is one of the most important franchises SE owns, and the fact that CD made it critically acclaimed and commercially successful, why would they give it to someone else? Something here doesn't match
