Starting with the most crucial:
1. Interactive environments 2. Immersive atmosphere 3. Puzzles 4. Traps 5. Combat |

For me, TR is first and foremost about adventure.
It should feature an intricate level design, with an abundance of different puzzles and traps. It should prioritize exploration — meaningful exploration, necessary for advancing through the level, not just going on a collectathon. Traversal should involve tricky platforming, preferably with consistent jump distances and no automation. The levels should be spiced with a touch of combat, with small encounters spread throughout the game. It should include a variety of enemies, from supernatural creatures to wild animals, as well as human foes. The games should feature diverse environments and historical locations. A sense of isolation should be promoted but not necessarily 100% of the time. In terms of tone, it should aim for that sense of wondrous adventure, mostly lighthearted, but balanced out with moments of tension, that can get even scary sometimes. This should also reflect on the game's music and sound design, which should be used to build up said tension and create the right atmosphere for each location. The main character should preferably be Lara Croft — an adrenaline junkie looking for the next adventure. The story should mostly focus on the adventure itself. No family baggage. No Lara as a survivor, or as a predator or as a murder suspect. Just Lara as an adventurer, an explorer, a Tomb Raider. |

I also prefer it when platforming is reliable and possible to master without becoming overly slow or cumbersome. I'm not a fan of magnetic ledges in LAU but nor do I enjoy the slowness of platforming in the old games. Something in between is ideal. |

A game that intrigues you and makes you wonder what's behind the next corner. This is crucial.
A game with beautiful breathtaking levels (Library of Alexandria and Cleopatra's palaces come to mind) A game that makes you feel like an explorer in search of something incredible. A game with exciting combat and an atmosphere of antiquity with some horror elements sprinkled in. |

I would also add intricate level design and fully explorable scenery (as opposed to being stuffed with generic, non-interactive landscapes and background scenery to just run past and through ). I suppose in addition to that I have a basic requirement to have a British aristocrat named Lara Croft as the main character, that she is our primary "in" into the story. |

Fun (but not a parody)
Mysterious (but enough threads to figure out) Challenging (but not enough to force a strategy guide every single second) Immersive (but clear on what can and cannot be interacted with) Replayable |

Something I always wondered is what makes Tomb Raider unique.
Because Tomb Raider - in my opinion - is completely unique. There are games that came close (The Indiana Jones Third Person games come into my mind) but something about these always felt different. I can't point it out exactly, but it's a mixture of Level design and the actions you can do. If you take Tomb Raider 3 for example. It has urban locations set in london and yet it feels completely "Tomb Raider" to me. Is it nostalgia? I don't know. Is it Lara? I don't know either. Maybe it's the fixed jump distances, the smooth animations or the the tank controls or maybe a combination of that. |

My definition:
"In each stage players are required to get out or to the center of a series of increasingly large and complex mazes with the power of platforming, interaction with the environment and key items." |
