Is the compass useful for anything?
I have always had a question about the compass in the classic TRs. It is useful? That is, it indicated the direction but it is really complicated in a TR for a compass to position you because the direction is relative (something can be up or down for example)

The compass is very necessary for TR tool 'position editor', so you can move Lara in the correct direction to another location,
and not end up embedded in a wall or behind the wall |

That is a very niche PC use and since the compass also features in the PS versions of (some/all?) TR games it doesn't explain why it is provided in those cases as it is otherwise practically useless.
In TR4 you did need to be pointing LC directly north for the level skip cheat to work. If I remember correctly it was painfully pedantic to do that just by using the compass. The requirement to be facing 'exactly' north was just a totally unnecessary additional hurdle, perhaps only there to justify its inclusion. Otherwise the compass was completely redundant. The only usage for the compass I can think of (except the cheats) is for written walkthroughs. Back in the days it might have been helpful to navigate players with the compass's directions.

It is the latest game I've redone again (probably the 10th time in full) and I do not recall using it that time or any other to solve a puzzle or even being just useful. I always get lost is Underneath The Sphinx in the underwater maze but knowing which way is N, S, E, W supposes you know where you are in relation to a pull out location. Most of time I don't, that is usually the problem. |
