This was, at the time, technologically seriously impressive, on top of being a great CGI short overall, as well as a great introduction of a new villain:
As much as DS2 was a disappointing entry on many levels in the series, its opening scene is by far my favourite: Last but not least, this...this is probably what sparked my interest in acting as a child: This was my first exposure to such theatricality, and as a highly impressionable kid I was hooked quicker than immediately. I think the Legacy of Kain series aged rather poorly, but this intro will always rest easy in my heart. |

It should be obvious what mine will be, but in case you haven't seen the opening cinematic from Onimusha 3, here it is.
This was released in 2004. The CGI is amazing. Donnie Yen did the choreography and motion capture. |

There are a few that stand out to me.The PS2 era was the first time an opening wowed me.
The first was Armored Core 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAZV7X94UFA Then it was Final Fantasy X. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOmsorZ1Y1U On the PS3 there is only one title that really stands out to me. Armored Core 4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5ACjBnBjOg Nothing else comes to mind right now. Only know how to post links. |

As much as I dislike the Lazarus Project (and trust me, it's taking all my willpower to not rage about it as I type this), I have to say that Mass Effect 2's opening is an absolute gut punch for anyone who was introduced to the franchise in Mass Effect and spent significant time in it before the second game was released.
And it was followed up by the best tutorial level of the original trilogy (Lazarus Station / Freedom's Progress). I still don't like the Lazarus Project narrative, and I wish I could rewrite ME2 to get rid of it, but I have to concede that the game opened well. |
