I think the problem is the lack of enemy variation.
They could have easily added caimans and other critters... Maybe even snakes when she's climbing the walls.. Heck even the small blue frogs stay in place for you to kill.

I never cared much for combat in TR (Shanty Town is an abomination that always makes me want to quit TR2013), so I was fine with EM drastically reducing enemy encounters in Shadow. My only issue is that they didn't rebalance the skill tree to reflect this change.

Every time I replay TR2013, I just stop at Shantytown. Fortunately, I also have the game on PC, so hurrah for saved games!
_______________

That’s really not what we wanted for Shadow.
Hopefully, it’ll never return to Tomb Raider...

I must be the only one who has no problems with Shanty Town. It would be weird for it to be deserted so I don't know. I thought it was pretty fun. It's been a year or so since I played TR2013 so I might change my mind in the future but still. I also liked exploring the whole thing when I'm done with those bastards. I like the hub. But I also like Paititi so I'm clearly a minority here.

The problem with Shanty town is that it is ugly as sin and it's not a joy to get through all that combat nor is it a joy to look at and run around for useless collectibles.

I liked it too. One of my fav parts of the game.

Speaking for me, but at least my problem with Shanty Town was that it was riddled with combat sequences where enemies would just constantly spam until you did a certain task. Yet most of the times there were too many enemies on screen to be able to do said task without dying in five seconds. It was too unbalanced. Besides, it was a hub that desperately needed a "enemies can lose track of you" SotTR-like stealth system.

But as a hub I agree, it was quite well designed (and so was Paititi, so I'm with you here ), and aside of combat, is actually well used, with big hub with actual story sequences happening on it that require exploration - what both RotTR and SotTR were unfortunately missing).

I always somehow forget about shanty town.

Then whenever I reach it I just groan due to the impending boredom.

I used Lara’s bow the entire game on enemies. Unless if it was needed for me to use her other weapons, and I used them on Dominguez. I agree with the lack of enemies in Shadow, the DLC sort of made up for it. I thought they would patch more enemies in, but they never did.

I really don't like Shanty town. It's feels totally out of place narrative-wise the way vulnerable Lara is suddenly slaughtering everyone. I also feel it's monotonous with wave-style combat and cutscene intros that remove any suspense. The worst section of TR2013 and not really a direction I want to see them return to.
