Neither the Embracer deal nor the Unification project have any sort of effect on the status of the movie.
Amazon/MGM (alongside GK Films) have the movie rights for the franchise. They can do literally anything they want with those, regardless of who owns the overall IP right now. The most it will happen is that if Amazon/MGM let the rights expire, they will then go to Embracer and not Square Enix. As for the unification project, the movies will be the one thing independent of that. I think Meagan Marie confirmed that. CD was working as sort of consultant just to make the movie still feel as part of the overall Tomb Raider brand, but in the end the movies can still do their own thing without being tied to the unified timeline. Right now, Tomb Raider Obsidian happening or not is only tied to Amazon deciding to send money with it or not, and it is independent of anything else happening to the franchise.

Yeah no.
They would want it to be tied to the upcoming game, whatever that may be. Movie and game separate from one another would be a marketing failure, similar to AOD and Cradle of Life. That's why when Crystal got a hold of TR, they tried to make Legend tie in with the AJ Movie canon because it still seemed like that could be revived. The Survivor era is over now. So whatever Obsidian was originally meant to be, it's going to be re-worked to align with whatever the future of TR is. And right now, we don't even know what that is yet. It's gonna take a looong long time. |

Not saying that any company involved might not want to have some synergy between game and movie (like the 2018 movie was not just loosely based on TR2013, but also having a teaser for SotTR at the end of the movie).
What I am saying is that if Amazon/MGM really want to make any movie, they have no obligation to work in line with the vision set by CD and now Embracer. They don't need to wait for anything and just do their own thing. Besides, Obsidian already is the movie sequel with the unification in mind right from the start. Even if not part of it, it was already written with that new vision of the franchise in mind. Dallas Dickinson confirmed he did some consulting for the movie, if I am not mistaken. The cancelled Ben Wheatley version is the one that might have been more in line with the Survivor era. And considering the animated series from Netflix, that started production at the same time that Misha Green was brought to the movie, is going to be part of the unified timeline, it's not that what CD wants to do with it wasn't very much set in stone, even if we don't know anything besides "every game and some side projects are canon, even if they might need retcons".

It's been a huge year of Ifs and buts for the franchise in terms of studio sales and all what's going on with the IP. I truly do think we will see a future for Tomb Raider but I just wish it didn't look so bleak for the sequel film. At this point if even Alicia is out of the loop things aren't gonna happen anytime soon.

So should we assume the names that appeared on the IMDB pages that we were discussing, are wrong after all?. It seems odd that they'd have these positions filled if nothing's happening, so presumably they are false.

I mean, they might be false, IMDB is very unreliable (even if I might be one of the people following it closer) or they might have been hired to gather the real scope of the script, to better grasp the movie's possible budget. What we have is basically the very, very basic of art and production teams. Could very well be a case of assessing how much the movie would actually cost to shoot, and deciding if it is worth it to go ahead with based on that or not. And if they go ahead, if they go theatrical, direct-to-stream, or a mix of both.

It wouldn't be uncommon for a preliminary team to come together to conceptualise the film.

The only thing that keeps TR alive is just its fanbase in videogames.
Who cares how much the recent trilogy sold in copies, there is a huge chunk of people who buy games to play and some don't even bother finishing them. So for movies, no one bothers and cares for this movie or Alicia Vikander. What matters is the impact and the trilogy had ZERO impact globally; no one even cares outside the fans and hardcore fans and video gamers. I think it is better to wait for the Animated series, see how well it is received and what sort of impact it might have worldwide and then decide whether TR2 should happen or not.
