Alright, time to bring a bit of controversy to this topic .

Saint Seiya is a way better series than Sailor Moon.

- More emphasis on combat and World Building.

- A better idea on how a character becomes so strong overtime during his trials as a warrior.

- Warriors look way cooler (that also includes Transformation Sequences.)

- Came out way before Sailor Moon (Saint Seiya made its debut in 1986 where as Sailor Moon came out in 1992) yet has such a strong fan following even to this day. While Saint Seiya doesn't has as strong a following in in North America, its an absolute classic overseas; So much so that singers have done covers of the opening of the series in many singing competitions:

- The opening song is friggin Iconic!

How many anime series got the friggin Struts to do a rendition of the iconic opening:

The ball is in your court now Sailor Moon fans .

Okay, I'm for the mood for some good Anime jush. I'd like to see one with gay romance. No hard yaoi, I don't mind sex scenes but I don't wanna watch those animes focused on porn with weird, slurpy sounds. The less cringe it is, the better.

Also, I'd like to see a relatively short anime that gets me hooked in and makes me eager to watch the next episode. Again, the less cringe it is, the better.

Can you reccommend me any of those?

Unfortunately, a lot of Yaoi Romance based animes are cringy and awkward as hell and its the main reason why I usually steer clear of them. The reason for this is because the main audience for Yaoi based animes are girls who watch them for the same reason as guys who watch Ecchi animes; Its defacto Fap Material for them.

Also, you need to be a bit more specific with your request. Do you want to watch an anime centered around action, horror and/or mystery with a Yaoi Romance in its background or do you want to watch a Slice of Life Romance Centric Yaoi Anime?

Yeah, it's such a shame they take the cringe route! A lot of nice stories out there are ruined to me for that reason and not only Yaoi

I honestly don't mind the genre as long as it has a decent gay romance. I used to not like sport themed series until I watched Yuri On Ice, so now I can watch everything.

I don't think SM was ever meant to be deep in the first place *points at manga*, so even if SS is better in those aspects, it's still comparing apples to oranges. Not to mention that Naoko Takeuchi was pretty much pressured to deliver new content to the anime studio, that she most likely didn't have time to properly develop anything, if she wanted.

Not my taste.

Not here, though. "Dragonball (Original, GT, and Z)" is the ultimate "tuga" classic, it was even referenced three times in a comedy show from 97-98. People (including myself) even remember "Dogtanian and the three Muskehounds" faster than they do "Saint Seiya" (case in point, this was made last year for a national radio station. Second point, I don't remember watching SS, and never bothered with the only 2 reruns it had, while SM had at least 8, plus Crystal).

Well I did a bit of asking around for you from my female friends who are Anime Watchers (and I hope you appreciate this because I had to answer very uncomfortable questions in the process ) and I got the following recommendations:

- Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi: Seems like a pretty simple and straight forward Romance Anime with a Yaoi Twist. There will be a forced kiss here and there but I have been promised that it shouldn't go further than that. Fair Warning: My female friend is a Yaoi connoisseur so her version of "tame" might not be so tame for others .

- Junjo Romantica: A different series done by the creator of Sekai Ichi Hatsuko. Again, simple straight forward Romance.

Its true that both these series fall into different Anime Genres (Sailor Moon is a Shojou Anime while Saint Seiya is a Shounen Anime) but IMO being a Shojou Anime shouldn't really hinder a good solid plot progression and meaty world building. Sailor Moon IMO might have gained access to Media Outlets in nations with heavy censorship laws for being a bit toned down (though I still laugh as to how far some counties to change the narrative in the series to censor the Lesbian Relationship in Sailor Moon S.) Saint Seiya however is a bit on the violent side. It had to be toned down IMMENSELY before it could be aired in North America.

Not even if I were to include the very "Shojou" transformation sequences from Saint Seiya Omega ?

Well seems like Portugal missed out , because it was an absolute hit in France, Spain, Turkey, most of the Middle Eastern Nations, a lot of the Panpacific Nations and Latin America. Hell, in Latin America, its a second religion. It was so popular that Reruns of the show actually had a lot more viewership than soccer matches!

Like I said before, since Sailor Moon is a shojou anime, it was easier for it to bypass a lot of heavy censorship laws as compared to Saint Seiya (which IMO would have been an absolute hit in North America had it not been so neutered.

There is a "shojou" influenced spinoff of the series that made its debut in 2018 called "Saint Seiya: Saintia Sho" but it was received very poorly; Mainly because it pretty much stomped on everything that made Saint Seiya a great show:

My original intent with what I said was that my impression of Sailor Moon was that it was made with a "I just want to do this fun story" mindset, rather than try to make things super deep, with complex world building. The first arc of the manga is as simple as simple can get, and the manga as a whole frequently has a bunch of butt-pulls (which fortunately were cut in the 90's anime, but unfortunately not with Crystal). Then the anime was being made at the same time as the manga, which would limit even more any possibility of complex storytelling.

Sorry, but no. But the animation is really nice.

It's not just the visuals that I really like in the SM transformations, the music is equally as great (gets me pumped every time). The "Moon Crystal Power", "Moon Cosmic Power", and the double "Moon Crisis" choreographies in particular are so in synch with the music, it's honestly genius, in my opinion.

On an unrelated note, the "new" transformation sequence that will be used in the upcoming Sailor Moon Eternal is proof of how important the music is. The choreography as a whole is the same as the 90's one, but the music is so meh and out of place, that it doesn't give the same effect.

Which is to say that Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon was never trying to be Saint Seiya, was never trying for the same audience, tone, or genre.

It would be the same as saying Shin Seiki Evangelion is an inferior anime because it didn't approach setting and character the way Fushigi Yuugi did.

Ladies and gentlemen... We did it... The absolute belief in Nerdism and a butt load of engineering has given rise to an actual life sized functioning Gundam.
