It's funny how Embracer will own everything TR now. They bought the publisher for the top cow comics and the reboot comics, the game developers and the IP, now Embracer will access to the movie rights. Everything under one umbrella.

Insiders add it’s a complete reboot and there are no casting or director commitments.
So on CD's side and GK Films, they actually don't care about who is Lara and who's directing and are more focused on getting the best deal possible. $$$

Edit: Even though I'm not financially invested in Vikander, it's not like I'm her agent - I'm actually quite gutted for her because she genuinely loved being Lara. She did the freaking LIVE EXPERIENCE and she definitely didn't get paid well for that gig! I wonder if CD will want a lead to be cast for BOTH Film and the next games. That's a twisty twist I just thought of but is genuinely possible!

Coverage from Deadline. It really does sound like Vikander is out unless Warners (who we know loved Misha's take on the sequel as they were willing to distribute her story vs Wheatley's) bring her back as they'd have movie continuity. https://deadline.com/2022/07/tomb-ra...it-1235080891/

In some ways it kinda serves CD right. They worked so hard to separate Lara in the reboot from her roots and now they are having to deal with an identity crisis for TR.

I'm very curious to see what the anime will actually be like given all the major transitions.

They struck gold with the deal they got for such a low price, are we entirely sure at this point that GK Films still don't own their stake?

From what it looks like in the articles GK Films are the ones shopping it alongside the game studio but I could be wrong.

EDIT: Reading the Deadline srticle it seems GK is still indeed attached and plans to do a reboot without Alicia so he must really already have a plan to just abandon the last film and start over I guess.

The Batman wouldn't be a bad template to examine doing a story were the lead is already an established character but the actor and world of the character is a fresh take without having to sit through an origin story.

My nightmare scenario is a Streaming Series and/or Gal Gadot as Lara Croft. She just cannot act.

I don't know, something in my gut says Paramount or Apple. If the bidding is that competitive I'd typically say Netflix but their starting to be careful with money right now.

This makes the most sense. They don’t want a new movie coming out that will directly contradict their vision for the future of the franchise that will confuse the public on who Lara is supposed to be.

I am pretty excited to see who will be the new Lara but in all honesty it could be someone who may rise to stardom that we don't know about yet, I don't see this film releasing until 2026 at the very earliest. Hopefully Graham King will want it out sooner than later.

Who would have thought that constantly procrastinating production and lazily caring about the sequel would have such consequences huh? Well done MGM.

Kinda feel bad about Alicia and Misha, they were both good choices for TR and were really invested in it, and that level of dedication is precisely why Alicia's performance as Lara was universally praised.

But now, I can't help but wonder: will the next movie feature unified Lara?
