Default Tomb Raider Legend marks sixteen year anniversary since release

Sixteen years ago today a new 'next generation' Lara Croft-helmed adventure released in Europe. Tomb Raider Legend would go on to sell 6.4 million units and position Crystal Dynamics as caretaker of the Tomb Raider franchise. Take a trip down memory lane as we mark this milestone by showcasing original assets and new additions from Tomb Raider 25 via the following hyperlink.

"In setting the stage for the Tomb Raider franchise moving forward, we took ourselves back to Lara's origins, asked ourselves the hard questions and challenged ourselves to think differently," said Chip Blundell, vice president of brand marketing, Eidos Inc. at the time. "Who is Lara Croft? What makes her tick? How is she relevant today? Only by answering these questions could we ensure that gamers get the experience they deserve with the character they love."

Tomb Raider Legend revives the athletic, intelligent and entertaining adventurer who won the hearts and minds of gamers worldwide. Lara comes alive with intricately animated expressions, moves and abilities. An arsenal of modern equipment, such as a magnetic grappling device, binoculars, frag grenades, personal lighting device and communications equipment, allows gamers to experience tomb raiding as never before.

Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, **** on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it.

I seriously have nothing but love for this game.

Yes it's too short and yes I know it by heart by now and any challenge it may have posed to nine-year-old me when I played it for the first time has long faded, but I don't care. I adore it.

It was my first ever Tomb Raider game so it will forever hold a very special place in my heart. Lara looks amazing, her characterisation is the best one we've got so far and Keeley took the role on a whole other level. She's sassy, she's badass, she's funny. The level variety is perfect, Croft Manor looks gorgeous. The scenery is gorgeous, I always love to walk around the levels so that I can take it all in. The collectibles and unlockables added tons of replay value, unlocking all outfits was literally my life goal in 2006-07 lol. Troels' soundtrack was top tier and, lastly, all of the ridiculous stunts and acrobatics she can pull off in this game are honestly something that should 100% return in the next game.

Happy birthday Queen. What an icon.

The nostalgia is strong with this one. I still remember how excited I was for this. I checked if there was a demo available every morning before school, lol. I remember the old Legend website and how awesome it was. Can't believe it was 16 years ago, I almost want to cry.

The nostalgia !!! Legend is my very first when I was 11 and I was OBSSESSED. I was lame, I was stuck like 3 or 4 times in the game and unfortunatly wasn't being able to pass Japan because well I was lame but didn't have the game anymore at that time. I finished the game just a year or two later !
Lost Artifact, Beneath the Ashes, Lara's Shadow and Ana Pure Hair for everyone

Legend is the best. let us hope they bring back some of Legend Lara's coolness in the next series.

How time flies! Absolutely LOVE this Lara, she was sassy and absolutely sexy as all hell! And I used to be obsessed with this game and this version of Lara.

Holy crap, 16 years already? I have to admit I couldn't believe it. I can remember it like yesterday buying it in Gamestation shop for the PS2 version. It was a good game but very short, this is before I start hating crystal dynamic, they were good but then they become a joke after that.
Rest in Peace - rr_carroll

I love the Core Classics, but Legend was super important and revigorated the franchise.

Loved it!

I remember playing it pretty well for the first time .

And not long after, making an account here to see what others thought of the game.

Was obsessed at the time and played it to death. I remember how refreshing it felt to have a Lara who moved so fast. I'm a diehard classic fan but I can't deny how awkward the tank controls could feel, especially at first or if you're coming back from a modern game and have to get used to them again.

I don't think this game has aged all that amazingly well if I'm being 100% honest, compared to Anniversary, the classics or even Underworld, so I don't feel an urge to revisit it much these days. I can appreciate it breathing new life into the franchise at the time though. It did what it needed to do.

Of the LAU trilogy, to me Anniversary remains the best.
