Cool How Meteorite Cavern was meant to be

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 30

Actually, THIS is how the Meteorite Cavern was meant to be. Peter remembered it was meamt to be quite different

*description copied from yt video as trf isnt optimized for mobile so even typing this sentence is bloody hard!!

Ever noticed that the final boss fight of Tomb Raider III never had a backing track? I for one am used to it so it's never been a big deal but after chatting with Sound Designer for the project, Peter Connelly (who went on to full score TR4, 5 and 6), he revealed that he had actually scored a fight theme specifically for this level but missed the submission deadline before TR3's final release. He then shelved the track and later used it again. The track is coined as 'Game Boss 01' in TR4 and used in the Chambers of Tulun when fighting the minotaur, and then also (AFAIK, the PSX version only), the scales puzzle in the Temple of Horus. It fits quite well!

Credit to Turbo Pascal for the CDaudio_Player editor to make the track injection possible, fraps for recording AND Peter Connelly for this amazing track!

The thing is, when I hear that track, it just immediately reminds me of TR4 Egypt, so seeing it included in the level now doesn't seem right to me. But had it been included from the start then it may have been a good track to have.

My thoughts exactly.
I think of the Minotaur with the Hammer and Temple of Horus from TR4 with this music.
I also think it kinda fits better in TR4.. has some really nice Egyptian sounding beat and bits in the music.. I don't know.. I feel like it's better suited to TR4.

I'm wondering if he altered it to fit the Egyptian mood of TR4, because it feels off compared to the rest of the TR3 OST. Personally, I like it better in TR4 but it's cool we find out some new TR trivia.

It was meant for the VERY last boss... I remember playing it, not long before release and thinking... there's no music... WHY??? That's why I wrote it
Quote from Peter himself

Ive also asked if the track was altered in any way to fit tr4, just awaiting a response

I also said to Peter that it doesnt feel fitting for TR3 BUT, what if it was included in tr3 like intended and not tr4. Would we say the exact same in opposite effect? likely yes because were used to the track being in specific spots in our TLR playthroughs over the years. Eh thats just my thinking. I know nothing about egyptian music, sounds or instruments so I cant say that this track gives off an 'egyptian vibe'

I feel TR3's globe trotting makes it difficult to produce a consistent OST. As a result, I think TR3's soundtrack isn't based on a consistent theme, but rather, tailored to the specific situation Lara is in. For example:

Lara is in a jungle.

Lara is in the middle of solving a puzzle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9ItrdOmfjQ

Lara is navigating a tricky area.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w97yz0Mj1W8

Lara is in danger.

On the other hand, TR4's OST feels more consistent with the theme of the game. Lara visits dark and depressing locations so the OST features dark and depressing music. A lot of the TR4 tracks also have a steady build up so it feels like there's a beginning, middle, and end to the track. There's also a consistency in regard to which "instruments" are featured in the soundtrack: Flutes, horns, harps, and lots of drumming/beating. This is why I wonder if Peter's track was altered to fit TR4's theme, because it features horns and heavy drum beats that sound more in line with TR4's OST than it does TR3's OST.

Not that any of this really matters, it's just more of a curious observation on my part.

No it's definately a great point! I never really thought of it that way, I like how you explained it you obviously have great knowledge in this regard unlike myself. Something still tells me though that because I don't really relate music to location and all that other jazz (I heard a track from TR and i think OMG TOMB RAIDERR!!111) I still feel i'd be a bit of a derp and place the track mentally to where I heard it. Yeah for sure, using Game Boss 01 in TR3 does indeed sound off but I still feel it's because I'm so used to it playing while I'm ripping my hair out with the Temple of Horus scales puzzle haha.

I'll definately link Peter to this thread for a gander at some point, i'm sure he'll love reading the opinions! He's probably one of the friendliest and most involved part of the tomb raider production team from ANY of the games.

He should be checked out on Facebook (page is called Peter Connelly Ltd), some great updates there. I complimented him on his music a few days ago while I was doing a TR4 playthrough then last night he posted a page update asking TR fans for their favourite tracks from TR4,5,6 that they would like to hear revamped and reinvented. He's considering doing like so when he's got some time free! (Proud to know I prompted this from him )

I didn't know that track was to be used in TR3. Nice find.

I'm sure I read somewhere that this was going to be the the track used for the final bossfight in TRIII but couldn't find the source.
It does feel slightly out of place however, it seems likely that the original track was modified to fit The Last Revelation.
