Combat is also fun because of the the possibilities you can do with the support abilities, however, I still prefer Avengers' combat.

The game was simply very poorly marketed. Even if we take Avengers into account, word-to-mouth, good reviews and awards would put down to earth that portion of the audience easily. Some ppl are using the Avengers as an easy escape-goat. Anyone with at least half a brain understands they're separate games, and one game being one way doesn't mean the other game is equal especially when they're not even in the same franchise or universe (at least directly), and when it was pretty clear that GOTG was a single-player driven experience, and in no way GaaS or any prequel or sequel to Avengers
You have to wonder why the game was so hard to market then. It can't always be someone else's fault.

If the marketing was bad, probably the game didn't have much to showcase.

There's no gameplay to speak of outside of combat and the combat itself looks anything but appealing. Like, you can't even control the other guardians why couldn't they just copy aspects of the combat from FF7R? Positioning, strategy, creative combos...? No, just strafe around the enemy holding down fire until it dies, waiting for the team cooldown to reset all in a dreadfully invasive UI. And this is what I get by just looking at the official reveal -- when games get the most attention they'll ever get.

The game is not hard to market. SE it’s just simply bad at doing it for their western games. SE or the companies the hire to do so. It happened with Shadow and with GOTG. The game got barely any promotion especially if you compare it to how FF is promoted. Then, just like Shadow, they decide to show the game publicly for the first time without the best footage as well as a very short announcement-release span. I mean, it would make sense for a short announcement-release window if the game was being promoted all over the place and with the best footage and strengths being shown, instead of the portions with banter and mostly nothing else happening, or some very random combat thrown in without displaying the full capabilities of having a leveled up team.

General consensus of the game is about it being pretty good and combat being fun. The worries about not being able to play the other guardians quickly dissipated once the game released.

The game was very well received in multiple fronts. The audience loved it and showered it with praise, as well as critics.

Avengers may be the Reason Guardians of the Galaxy Underperformed

While disagree it’s the only reason GotG underperformed I’m glad this angle is being talked about. Any Marvel fans that picked up Avengers and were left bitter and soured by the game thought this was going to be more of the same, and coupling that with the terrible ad campaign that did nothing to quell those problems people had, this game was destined to underperform.

The end of the article talks about how the future of the this game franchise is in jeopardy and that’s a shame since many now will be able to play it, see it’s not a disaster, and most likely want a sequel that may never happen. Let’s hope GamePass helps push this game further.
