The only reason gaming became more mainstream was the realisation that there was millions to be made from desperate hooked gamers frothing at the mouth for the next release.
As soon as all the wrong people realised how much you could exploit gamers who would always come crawling back for more, they suddenly decided that it wasnt such a bad industry after all.

I think that this wasn't mentioned in the stream at all, but the individual trailer on Nintendo's YouTube page has "Cloud Version" in the title.

The Nintendo Wii and smartphones also helped a lot with making gaming much bigger because suddenly people who used to have no interest in video games started getting into this hobby as well.

So it wasn't just me, thanks. Weird they didn't mention that in the stream.

In which case I'm intrigued as to how videogames have managed to become more of a thing over time. I believe that games and consoles have gradually gotten more expensive over the years, so I doubt it's a case of people not being able to afford them in the past. Videogames have always been a huge part of my life and the lives of certain other individuals who I've known.

Actually in the early mid 90s consoles and games were way more expensive than they are now.

For example, the cost of the Sega Saturn, a notoriously expensive console on release, was launched at 399. Taking into account inflation that's about 800 in today's value. Similarly Sega genesis games used to sell for 60+.

In terms of affordability gaming has ages quite well.

I was under the impression that the PS1 was only about 100 when it first got released, whereas the PS5 is several hundred more. Perhaps I'm remembering wrong about the price of the PS1, not to mention that there's inflation to account for as well, like you pointed out.

Nope the PlayStation 1 launched at 299 (608 inclusive of inflation).

They undercut the Saturn by a lot which led in large part to their massive success but it was still a lot comparatively to today's standards.
