Not sure if I've typed it out correctly, but I ended up getting an error when I tried. I've attached an image.

However, I have managed to get the audio working. I didn't need to disable any mounted CD drives either. I think the problem was resolved with a utility called Tiido's SETYMF. Once it configured the sound card there's an option to save it to the autoexec.bat and msdos.sys, so I'm guessing that's what sorted it.
Prior to that, I don't recall doing anything else special. I checked and re-arranged the cable from the CD-ROM drive to the sound card, but I tested it after and there was no difference. And I wasn't able to test out whether I can play music from the CD by plugging headphones into the drive; there's no jack on it.

All that's left to try and sort out now is the lack of audio when playing it in Windows.

Just a syntax error here:
Quote:
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 MSCDEX /L:F
when you type
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

(btw you know typing mscdex to the command-line interpreter is perfectly equal, but quicker, to mscdex.exe, especially... if there is such an exe and no ditto .com or .bat files around )

now mscdex gets going after hitting Enter alright (EDIT: or as in this case when the autoexec batch file is launched)
but examining the argument/parameter list the second call to mscdex there (that is after /D:MSCD001) will surely mystify the system, like the opening of an open door
a parameter miscarriage
so the correct way to go about it is just

C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /L:F

Ahh, okay. Yeah, that makes sense. Especially when some game executables have single unique names and don't need the .exe or .bat at the end to load.

Ah-haa. Fair enough. One too many... 'words'...? ^^; Thanks for clarifying.

Yep. That sorted it. And after some experimenting, the sound card configuration utility seems to be the cause of why the audio doesn't work. I was using something called UNISOUND. Re-enabling that again prevented the audio from working again. So a different utility called SETYMF seems to rectify it. I'm not quite sure what it's doing differently though.

Also, the audio is working in the game when played in Windows via DOS. Except... the CD audio. XD Audio devices can be tested during setup, too. I hear Lara's voice.

Got the CD audio working if trying to play it in Windows. The solution for that is to set the physical CD drive back to E.

Thanks everyone who offered suggestions. 👍🏻
