After looking it up on ebay out of curiosity I just discovered the Japanese version of TR3 came with 2 discs. The easier Japanese version and the international version.

How cool would that have been when you bought TR3? If it came with an easy mode disc with heal crystals and lower difficulty they had it good.

Are you guys talking about the Japanese version of TR3 that's easier to get it over and done with quicker?

Yeah I think it's fair to say that the level design is pretty hard to defend.
It broke my heart as a kid with how brutal is was in every way and being able to overcome it now is so satisfying in it's own wierd and unique way.

I love forcing myself to hoarde crystals and every dangerous jump in those first few levels being a huge gamble that could set me back half an hour.
I think it's that feeling that Soulsbourne players talk about that I never understood where it's brutal and unforgiving but that just makes the expeience such a unique thrill.

I would get into no load runs but I like TR3 being that one special entry I go to when I want to feel that knot in my stomach every time I make a dodgy jump.

Ok all right. I understand there's geometry differences and are there healing crystals in the Japanese version too?

Seems so, downloaded it earlier I had to check it out.

HO-LY crap do enemies go down fast!
Only got up to fighting one Shiva statue so far but must've only been like 2 shotgun hits and it was already over.

Correct. The Japanese PS1 version is more similar to the worldwide PC release in this regard, saving is unlimited via the inventory and crystals on the map are instead, small health boosts. The game is also, a shade brighter overall! Owing to feedback after the original worldwide release was quite review bombed for its darkness. The Japanese releases came roughly 9months after the originals, so some small improvements and bug fixes had the opportunity to be incorporated.

Starting in TR2 JP on the PS1, Laras weapon damage delivery was doubled. This continued through to TR5 JP.

TR3 JP however is the only one with significant geometrical changes, and a 2disk release including the original international version for Japanese players to try the English dub, and TRs worldwide intended difficulty.

Geometrical changes in the other TRs are very little.
Eg. The secret room from Tomb of Qualopec in TR1JP has, a small hallway added as a safety ledge over the spike pit.
TR5JP, in Escape with the Iris, there is a ramp added underneath the initial ceiling trapdoor to highlight its location incase players miss it I guess. These are some of the only geometrical changes I've spotted outside of TR3JP.

London levels. Players who hate London like to have their ears, eyes and brain tickled...

Ok. I've btw tried playing with it and the 1st control setting method is basically set differently than the 1st one in the USA/UK version. Right? I like the idea there's some geometry differences and some items that are placed in some areas in the Japanese particular type of build. I think the gamma is also increased to the maximum in that significant type of build as well. Right?

It definitely seems a little bit brighter.

The funny part though is that now it just feels like this really wierd mix of easy and hard that don't gel together at all.

One thing I was expecting was 'poison only takes you down to red health and stops'
But no, you take too long using a healthpack or finding a crystal you're done for.
