Ah yes. No pity.

"Quickly, girl, before it collapses around you!"
"Back again, Werner? No more Set?"
"No time! Your hand, Lara, give me your hand!"
"It's good to see you again, Werner."
"I couldn't leave you!"
--passage collapses, Werner takes off his hat and bows his head--
--searches for Lara for who knows how long, enough to find a backpack, unaware she was already rescued by a bedoin tribe and shaman--

NO PITY. AT ALL. SO OBVIOUS GUYZ.

^It was Jean Yves who never went looking for Lara. He gave her up for dead in TRC, well until he was replaced by Charles Kane that is But originally it was supposed to be Jean who is murdered.

Found this on youtube today, described as the beta flashback scene. It includes the kiss scene that was cut out as well. Man, Ash needs to start telling us when he posts this stuff It was 3 weeks ago lol
It's great to finally see that cutscene rendered completely without any post effects. Seeing the models in full colour looks amazing.

It would have been so powerfull if it was Jean-Yves instead of Werner imo.

But it's weird they didn't changed that line, especially since we have a line with Carvier where Lara says something like "If I wanted to kill I could have do that in Egypt". Just make no sens to say this about Jean-Yves so there must have been some changes on those lines.

Would have loved to see NG Jean-Yves !

Well judging by the rest of the AoD character models, he would have been lower poly than his original FMV model.

I really hope a clean, high quality version of the opening Chase FMV gets uncovered. For some reason that FMV is notoriously low quality... even worse than TR4's FMV files from 4 years earlier.

FYI I uploaded TR1-6 FMVs in 4k. All were cleared and upscaled using AI:

Amazing quality. Looks much better without postproduction effects. But don't you think kiss is the creepiest thing in this vid? Von Croy is murdered, his guts are used to paint some ritual stuff on wall. Blood is flowing on carpet but Lara kisses still warm body. Lovely

To be fair, I believe the change from Jean-Yves to Werner was made very early on in development, given the real-life Jean-Yves Empereur was threatening to sue Eidos and all that.

(although, this apparently took place in 2001, which doesn't explain why he was so hastily edited out of Chronicles, which was released the year before - unless there were things going on behind the scenes, which I guess makes sense to presume )

I'm pretty sure all of the dialogue was more or less written with Werner in mind, and only a few broader concessions (like having an apartment in Paris, or even being actively involved in archaeology still) were made with respect to Jean-Yves being in his place originally, for the sake of not having to rewrite the overall plot.

EDIT: For the record, I've got to say, that airlock cutscene is perhaps my favorite in the entire franchise. I just love the cinematography, and something about Lara indignantly pacing back and forth at the end just speaks volumes to me about her character.
